  • EGR tube and header gasket

The muffler guy installed headers for me. Between the EGR tube and the header he put a white gasket. It toasted in three weeks and there are fumes running before the hood and coming through the A/C vents. I can not see the muffler guy again, it's a long story, what I can say is that he is not honest man. I have used the black card board gasket and it toasted. I have been looking in several auto parts stores for that specific gasket and nobody has it. Someone recomended me asbesto to make the gasket and the only auto store that has it wants 15 bucks per sheet. Other guy recomends a kind of metalic or alluminum material but I have not found it. The dealer said that originally there's no gasket between that tube and the manifold. What do I do?

Try some high temp silicone. Let it set up before you start the car. Put the bead around the ridge in the tube that stops it from going into the header any further. Ultra Copper is a good High temp silicone.

Your dealer is right, but the z28 had one. Go to an auto parts store and get one for a z28. The z28had two bolts securring the egr, but you can trim off the extra bolt hole if you want.

you might need to get a new lower hose assembly. when it gets re-installed, sometimes it gets banged up and doesnt fit together right. thus any gasket you put in there will blow out. i went through 3-4 different kinds of gaskets before replacing the hose assembly, and now i dont really have that problem anymore!

What kind of gaskets? Did you try High Temp Silicone?

:naughty: I did it yesterday and until now the high-temp silicone looks in very good condition, no leak. Thank you bigbrian for your advice. Let see if the silicone gasket lasts at least some good time. Today also I reconnected the battery terminals and the SES light went off. I hope it lasts for some time in that way since I did many things to stop the leaks in the EGR pipe, in the connection with the header and in the exhaust pipe that goes before the header.

Copper RTV is the best , it worked for mine also.

high temp silicones/ ultra copper aren't rated for that amount of heat even intermittently

I just put headers on and ended up having to use JB weld. I've got that white gasket too, hopefully it'll hold up.
