  • Air Silencer Removed

A few unexpected taxes came my way, so I had to push back my whisper lid purchase. But to make up for ignoring my car during its 5 month hibernation, I at least removed the air silencer. In its place I threw in a 3 inch PVC coupler.

I soaked the old clamps with some WD-40 and carefully pulled them out and replaced them. Some rubber came up with the old ones, but I made sure to recondition the rubber collars afterward. Ignore how dirty the engine bay is. That is another upcoming project.

    Before:

    After:

My only concern is the seal made around the neck of the air lid and the rubber collar. I pulled the collar forward as much as I could, but it still has some sort of a gap underneath. I couldn't feel any air moving or hear any unusual noises while the car was running. Should I be concerned about any leaks there or is that just how it fits?

Also, there was a considerable amount of sludge built up in the neck and bottom of the air silencer. I've heard about "feedback" from the engine, but this looked and smelled like oil. Is that to be expected from an engine with 80,000 miles?

I've never seen any oil past the throttle plate towards the filter so that to me is weird.. I haven't even seen carbon gunk past the throttle plate. On the other side of it though in the upper intake manifold I've seen plenty of carbon. Is there any getting on the actual filter itself? Also, if it is oil then you may want to get that checked out cause to me that just seems weird.

Also on the elimination of the baffles. Looks good but if that pvc coupler is flexible rubber too that might not be too good of an idea. Maybe an actual short piece of pvc so you can really tighten down the clamps. Also if you haven't, take your airlid and trim the fins on the inside so it's nice and smooth. That'll help.

No oil in the filter. It was all caught by the air silencer. Wasn't pooling or anything, just a noticeable amount down there. As for the pvc coupler, it's fairly thick and very stiff. Of course it will soften and loosen up, but the clamps are down very tight. I'll keep an eye on it though.

Thanks. Guess I need to get in there and clean it.

Well, I haven't gotten to pull it out yet. I started it up and let it run for a couple minutes to check for any leaks and couldn't hear too much difference. But it's also in the corner of a hanger, so my exhaust drowned out a lot of the noise. There was a bit of a whine/hissing noise when I gave it some gas, but that could've also been a leak.

Once I replace the stock lid with a whisper lid, I'm sure it'll sound better. But I'll let ya know how it sounds when I pull it out later this weekend.

You're not gonna hear a whole hell of alota difference in sound. Around 3k+ rpms you will hear some but it's nothing huge. I remember when I first got my whisper airlid.. I was hooked and now I've spent wayyy too much on my car. Eh well it's worth it in my opinion.

Yeah it's a 3"X3" coupler you get from lowes.

Also when I did this like a year or two ago, it made a big difference as far as hearing the engine in a stock car. I had a completely stock car and this + !silencer + cutting out the baffles was the very first mod I did. The sound was very noticeably deeper and a little louder.

i couldn't make just a coupler fit nor just a piece of 3" pvc. I combined the two pieces so that they would both seal on the stock boots as well as be long enough.

yes, shaving the inside of the air lid is a good idea too.

u know the ducts that are used for house air conditioners and for the back of a dryer.. is it ok to use one of those? cuz walmart sells a small size that fits right on it. just might not be able to put the air sensor on it.

it looks like you have a pre 1999 f body. your intake is different. the mods in this thread are for 99+ v6 f bodies. your cold air/smooth air intake will be different.

please dont use dryer ducting. not picking on you... it looks like you recently joined. maybe do some more reading of sticky posts and related threads for your vehicle. there is so much 'bad' about dryer ducting i dont even know where to start. :-)

                          gl. welcome to the gang.

so what would i use for my 98 firebird? the intake goes straight to the front but its got a dip. i'll need a flexable tube.

After looking at that again.. I'm pretty sure your IAT probably makes inaccurate readings. It's not in the air flow at all. You're probably losing performance because of it.
