  • o2 emulator question

ok so my question about o2 emulators is if you get one will it work to fool the sensor that is BEFORE the catalytic converter? and would there be problems if i were to take the whole exhaust off from the headers and put an o2 sensor for the one b4 the cat AND one after the cat?

wouldnt make sense, the one after the cat is the one thats going to throw the code

true. thas is why we put the sims on the 2nd port sensor

well cause in my 98 bird (now i have an 02) i was just messing around and took the exhaust off right from the headers and tried running it and it ran like crap so i wasnt sure if i needed an o2 sim just for the cat or for both the one by the headers and the cat.

open headers = not very efficent

From what I understand the aftercat 02 sensor only checks for emissions, it doesn't actually control how the engine runs. If that sensor is bad, then it only throws a code, not actually effecting anything other than the light in your dash.

You do have an 02 sensor on each of the headers right? I'm not quite sure how the 98's work.

2 o2 sensors all together. 1 on the drivers side header and 1 after the cat

That sensor does effect either the fuel to air ratio, or the timing. I'm pretty sure its the fuel to air, either way I wouldn't suggest messing with that one. If you are fabing up some kind of special exhaust, then I would just weld on a bung or something. The one after the cat can definetely be replaced with a sim though. Hopefully that is what you were looking for.

No no no. There are two o2 sensors that affect A/F ratio. one on each header/manifold. Those determine A/F ratio. There is a pre cat and a post cat o2 sensors. Those take further readings but don't affect anything regarding how the engine runs. Taking off the pre cat sensor won't affect anything, but i'm not sure if a sim would work in it's place. Either way you shouldn't need it because it's precat anyway... where are you planning on cutting your exhaust?

This is on 97 and older 3.8's. 98+ did away with the single O2 in front of the CAT.

                      Incorrect. 3 O2 sensors on 98+ 3.8 F bodies and 4 on 97-.

Both left and right headers/ exhaust manifolds have an O2 sensor, then a post CAT O2.

For 97- there is an additional O2 sensor in the pipe just in front of the CAT.

Right, I failed to mention that, but it's still true that there are two o2 sensors that affect the a/f ratio. The post cat o2 only reads whether or not the cat is working.

Ya know.. running your car with open headers isn't very smart. Cold air can creep up there and get to your valves causing them to warp. If your car runs ****ty when you get the exhaust all back together this is probably what you've done. :)
