  • Taking off the Muffler?

I was thinking about taking the muffler off of my stock 3.4 and just dumping the exhaust after the axle. This would just be temporary until I get the $$$ for a real system.

I guess what I'm wondering is if this will sound "kinda shyttie" or "really shyttie?" Out of the videos I've seen on Youtube it doesn't sound that horrible, and much better than stock. I would just be taking the muffler off, so I could always just put it back on if it sounds too annoying.

I'm just looking to make it a little louder and a little less restrictive. Mind you I live in Michigan where the air is crystal clear and emissions tests are no where to be found

Also I was thinking, would a 3" non-mandrel bent exhaust system flow about the same as a 2.5" mandrel bent one? Because the price difference between buying a kit and having it custom bent is huge.

    Thanks guys :)

IMO they do not sound too good with no muffler at all. I have a 3.4 with a flowmaster 80 series and it sounds great.

If I were you I would not remove it until you are ready to install the system of your choice.

They have cherry bomb glass packs at Meijers for 20 bucks. maybe i should just throw one on for now?

      Hmm new plan.

I'll remove the muffler, and then drive it to the store. That way if it sounds good I can just turn around and come home. Otherwise I'll just walk in and buy a new one :D

      brilliant i might think

...only thing that makes you a noob now is that you wanna put a glasspack on it..... but, then again most of us were there at one point, so dont feel bad lol

I have a 3" non-mandrel bent exhaust system made for me from the Y-pipe back with a magnaflow muffler, but I also have an electronic exhaust cutout, and let me tell you I love the cutout. I drive around with it open almost 80% of the time. I only close it on the highway (drones...) or when I'm comming home late and dont want to wake anyone up. I have a 3.8 SII though, so I dont know how the 3.4 sounds compared to it. Once I heard my car with open headers (amazing) I wanted that sound. Its not obnoxiously loud either, it just sounds good. Hell I know a guy with a cutout on his V8 that drives around with it open all the time too (sounds so amazing...wish us V6 guys had that sound :P)

I would think no muffler would be annoyingly horrible.

Okay, good to know about the glasspacks, I still think I'm going to try taking it off. I mean, if worst comes to worst I'll just put it back on.

This guy did it, doesn't sound too bad at all. Dunno if its a 3.8 or a 3.4 though. ---> http://www.youtube.com/v/nk6E7xxclLw&hl=en

I would really love to do the cutout but I think headers, catback, highflow cat, new car, ect. would be a better investment first. lol :-\

Oh come on, tell me that isn't the sweetest sound you've ever heard.

                  /sarcasm.

but seriously thanks for setting me straight on the glasspacks. I thought they were pretty well accepted until I actually looked into it. lol

                    Re: Taking off the Muffler?

I had done that to my camaro, at low Rpms it sounds like a V8. But soon as you start going into the mid range to high range Rpms it sounds like a ricer mobile, I'm not trying to bash on the 3.4L or anything like that, but it just sounds like a ricer car at high Rpms. Personally I would leave the stock muffler on it and just wait till you get the money to put on the system.

Isn't that how it sounds even with a system?

                          Re: Taking off the Muffler?

My muffler rusted off at the inlet and I never replaced it and it was loud as hell. It sounded good at idle but any thing over 1500-2000 RPM's sounded horible. When I bought my Mustang I realized how obnoxious my bird was and I fixed it shortly after. Leave it on and buy a new system when you get the chance.

Just wait, you won't fool anyone and will only make yourself look ignorant. It will sound great at idle, but any time you get on the gas, its gonna sound like a weed wacker.
