Tommorow (or the next day) I'm planning on taking my throttle body off to clean it out and do the coolant bypass. I've done my searching and I think I know what I'm doing but just want to have someone take a look at my shopping list to make sure:
carburetor cleaner
rtv sealant or JB weld (I haven't decided)
gasket (this? says TBI gasket...looks right)

This will probably open Pandora's box, but I need to ask anyway.

Why are you doing the coolant bypass?
well I've always disagreed with pumping hot engine coolant into air that I want to keep cool. I understand what its for, cold engine starts, but I live in Texas, and our winter is about a week long, so...
interesting note, my car says Pontiac Canada inside the door, does that mean it was made there? or do they all say that

not JUST cold starts. the coolant acts the same way through the entire system, it allows the heat to dissapate faster keeping your engine cooler.
wasntt here a test where someone found out the coolant bypass was actually hurting performance? intake charge was hotter than ever with the bypass done.

If that's your goal, you're going to have to block more than just the TB; you'd have to block the upper and lower intake manifolds too. Doesn't make much sense to make 3" of your intake cool, while you still have a hot 20 or so inches that the air still goes thru

hmm thats interesting. I'll look for it. Seems it would better to route it through something else though...I guess I probably won't do it today. Mostly because they don't have the gasket in stock, but also because I apparently need more research

I understand what you're saying but doesn't every pinch that has some possible beneficial results count? TB spacers do the same thing right?
If there is a study where they found out it's actually hurting performance I'd like to read it. Otherwise, I don't see it hurting anything.

To a certain point, on a particular platform, maybe...On a stone-stock car, maybe you'd see a .03 gain in MPH on the track, but on any significantly modded car, it won't make much difference. The faster you go, the more energy is required to go even faster...with my car, doing some lame mod like TB bypass wouldn't change a thing in how it ran; it definitely wouldn't show up on a timeslip, and I'd bet my HPTuners would be hard-pressed to find any difference in the data it pulls from the PCM.

Some add some bit about "atomizing" the air and putting it into a vortex for better combustion

Never said it hurt anything...I just said it won't give the desired results; I don't think the OP is looking for a half-degree cooler air

I was looking into the TB coolant by-pass on my 97. I pulled the TB off, and the coolant goes into the actual TB a whole 3/4", tops! Didn't seem worth it to me; That bit of a difference won't drastically reduce temps. Like it's been said, the air still gets warmed by the intake manifolds; seemed to me like a waste of RTV :P
yeah, now that I'm looking at this, any benefit seems to be canceled out by the intake manifold getting hotter. So I'll guess I'll wait until I can get an intake manifold plenum spacer! those are pretty tight. Not sure if they make them for the 3.8 though? I suppose it wouldn't be too difficult to fab if I knew what they were made of...probably some sort of high heat epoxy.
Hey guys. For starters I’ve always been a big car guy, I love all types of cars and can appreciate all types of engineering. I’ve always been a Chevy...
Hello every one, ozzy here ive been looking at this page for weeks now finally joined. So my question is why is it that every turbo build forum just ends...
