  • Cat Delete.. Help me out guys..

I have a 98 and I'm redoing the entire exhaust system in my car, I bought CIA headers and Y pipe and a magnaflow cat back kit. I have the cat back kit in my car now and I'm waiting on installing the headers until I figure this crap with the CAT out...

I want to do a CAT delete on my car, after talking to the auto parts guys and speaking with a fairly respectable muffler shop I was told that I'd wreck my motor and get gas in my oil from burning too rich... I have no idea as to how this would happen (considering cars didn't have CAT's before and they were fine then), but I got the same answer from two different sources.. Despite how rediculous that answer seems, I'm not so sure... Has anyone heard of this sort of thing happening with a CAT delete? If so, how can you counter it? Will it involve ECU tuning or is it something simple that I can do myself? What will it involve??

not sure why they would tell you that but a lot of guys run catless or with a gutted cat. You will be fine other than setting an SES light for the rear o2 sensor as it will sense that your cat is not working properly which is true cause it is no longer there. Either get an o2 sim, tune it out, or just live with the light on.

But yes you can run catless just fine

Okay so that BS I was told about burning rich(er) and gas in the oil pan isn't true.. I was wondering how the heck that could possibly happen... Guess some people are dumb..
I was thinking about getting a universal O2 simulator from O2simulator.com, these work fine for our cars? Thanks..

if i can say one thing in regards to the 3.4 actually being better than the 3.8 it is in the sense that it doesn't have to deal with all this crap like the 80$ o2's and the o2 after the cat and the MAF etc.

other than that and maybe changing spark plugs the 3.8 is def way better, but at least i don't have to deal with this crap.

just thought i'd add that in there =)

i dont think the after cat 02 sensor (if there even is one) affects your a/f ratio at all

and the cars that didnt have cats were not computer controlled, which is why they didnt get damage

they told you that you would mess your engine up so you arent driving around polluting the air more than it needs to be.

the cat was put there for a purpose, not to just cost us more money

i run without a cat...no big deal...car runs fine...the SES light is on...and yes its because of the after cat o2, i just live with the light on and check it every once in a while to make sure i have no new codes...although an o2 sim to keep the light off would be nice....

so the 3.4s dont have a o2 sensor after the cat, just the two on the headers right? Can u pass inspection with gutted cats (NJ)?

i have a 3.4 and i think im gona redo my exhaust to true duals off the headers h-piped, I know NJ has a visual inspection thats why i want to throw two gutted cats on there

No the 3.4 doesn't have the third O2 sensor behind the cat.. That sensor is just for CAT readings and is on OBDII cars (95+)

I don't think you can pass an emissions test with gutted cats from what I know.. There isn't aircare out here in Victoria, but I do know they have sniffer to see your emissions, which will be bad from no cat.. Plus most gutted CATS reek of sulfur..

EVERYONE ELSE thanks for your info, I talked to a real mechanic who told me that the other guys didn't know what they were talking about.. So your right, and my CAT is scheduled to be ripped out on Monday..

i have a 98 maro, with a straight pipe in place of the cat, runs fine, bought a sim and never threw a code, works great only downside i can think of is that it may smell a little rich for the first few times, essentiall its just free flowing from the block out through the exhaust which is the only hypothesis i can think of for why a mechanic would think that i may be burning oil, or trying to sell you a cat, i have pacestter headers, dynomax muffler and i went out and bout a 24" straightpipe from autozone and welded it right up.
