  • electric cutout problem

I have an 02 3.8l v6 camaro and it has the stock exhaust system still on and instead of buying an aftermarket exhaust system I decided an electric cutout was the better choice due to neighbors call the cops for everything and I want my car to sound louder but a good sounding loud w/o them calling the cops and with the electric cutout I can shut it off. Anyway, I wanted to put it after the header collector and before the cat but the distance between them two is 11 inches but the cutouts length is 12 inches. What should I do? Is there anyway to make it fit?

Cut out a small section after the cat so you can move it towards the rear a bit more. Or is it not that simple? If the O2 sensor wire length is the problem I believe someone makes extensions.

the cat already is really short so getting another cat wouldn't solve anything...moving the cat back an inch might solve it but then I'm gonna have to re weld the cat to the pipe again and welding is something I wanted to avoid...not something big enough to stop me from doing this. I don't think the O2 sensors will be a problems considering all the exhaust will be exiting before they even get to the rear O2 sensors and as far as O2 sensor malfunctions, the computer should still think that the exhaust is exiting through the muffler and no service engine problems should occur..but I have been wrong before...i'll have to check up on if there's room to move it back an inch.

If I were in your situation I would put the cutout in the usuall place for an F-Body which is post-cat towards the rear (there is a perfect space for it where it can be angled more to the side instead of downwards). And if your worried it wont be loud enough since its goin through the cat just spend a few extra bucks to get a high flow one or hollow it out since your original plan bypasses the cat anyways. I bought my cutout about 2 months ago and it was the best $25 ive ever spent.

With the cutout open before the cat along with an O2 sensor still in working order it will probably throw a code with the cutout open. Either way the post O2 sensor is just there to tell if the cat is working. If the cat doesn't reach a certain temp which is probably won't with a cutout in front of it, it will most likely throw a code.
There are ways to get rid of the code from showing up as a SES.. 1 is a sim and 2 is a tune.
Also, I highly recommend doing your own welds.. I'm not saying that they'll be pretty at first.. or even when your more experienced but, having a welder is invaluable. Even if it's a cheap one like I got from harbor freight. It get's the job done and you can take a grinder to whatever nasty residue is left over to smooth it out as much as you want.

how much do you think a welder would cost?? I don't care what quality...the cheaper the better cuz I planned to do my own welds.

I bought one that was somewhere around the $130 range. It doesn't make pretty welds but it gets the job done.
