  • Bolt-On Cat?

Anyone have one here? do they leak? I know a 3.4L had bolt on cat's, but that was factory designed for them. Are their any aftermarket ones I should stay away from? Any ideas on where to look? Also on more thing, if I get one now, are they adjustable or do I have to specify exhaust piping size? Reason I ask is I'm so tired of replacing the cat on this thing and frankly would rather do it myself instead of them rewelding it "again". This will be the 5th cat on this car. (ran rich a few times in the past, shoot me) I want to be able to upgrade the piping to 2.5 or to 3.0 instead of the stock 2.25. I need a cat though now (it's blown) and can't afford the catback exhaust and headers and cat all at once. So an adjustable cat would be nice so I can just use it again.

well that's my thing, like I stated it's been done 4 times before and I'm so tired of replacing it. I know I have to replace it now, but when I upgrade my exhaust to 2.5 or 3.0 I want it to be able to just unbolt the cat and install the exhaust/headers/y-pipe and rebolt the cat instead of have them either replace the cat again or reweld it. Can they reweld? I think I'm running out of space down there. They keep cutting, refitting, eventually they will right?

        Re: Bolt-On Cat?

could I just get a cat that needs welding, get some rubber gaskets and then clamp it on?

because it pisses me off that I can't weld, so I have to take it to some dude that fondles and molests the under carriage of my baby while I watch...I dunno...is it not possible?

                    Re: Bolt-On Cat?

Well another reason I want it to be bolt on is so I can either put a straight pipe on one day or put a cut out the next or if I want to be legal slap the cat on there. I just think it'd be nice to be able to do that. I just don't want it to leak... if I decide to go straight pipe could I get it at home depot? what gauge metal does it need to be? Thinking for my 2.25" stock get a 2.5" pipe and find or fabricate a gasket for each end and clamp the ***** in place.

tubing should be 16 gauge for anyone that cares...

                        Re: Bolt-On Cat?

you could fabricate something up... maybe buy a cat and weld little bit of slightly oversized exhaust pipe to each end so that it can be slip fit over the surrounding pipe. use some 2 bolt style band clamps and you have yourself a bolt on cat

would you suggest a gasket for this setup or just band clamp it shut?

                            Re: Bolt-On Cat?

Get a "Ball Flange Kit" from summittracing.com, weld them onto the converter, y-pipe and cat back pipes. You'll then have a complete bolt on converter.

The kit on summittracing is called; Flowmaster #15925

I'd cut & paste a link, but I cannot seem to get it to work right now ...???
