I had my 3" cutout right brfore my Dynomax Turbo muffler and even a little open and it sounded like crap, thats why I sold my cutout and just stayed with the muffler. Sounds alot better just through the muffler. Don't know about stock exhaust though but my 3" exhaust with RK headers,no cat, sounds great.

the stock z28 exhaust sounded the best for your 3.8. Not too fancy or expensive either. I have magnaflow catback on my ss and I love it. I had magnaflow on my 3.8 too, sounded smmmooootttthhhhhh... Not raspy at all. heres a link. I swear by it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ESaZI...om=PL&index=18
Keep in mind the 3.8 has absolutely no other mods. Just a magnaflow catback. it sounds good. Not like a v8, but like a highend v6. WOuld sound better obviously with headers and hiflow cats. I dont know anything about cut outs.
