Why is it that a lot of people who are over 40 keep telling me that I am going to blow my car up with nitrous? Was it really just not very safe back in the day? Its getting really discouraging. Am I probably going to blow it up?

you need to remember that older cars did not have rev limiters and were not built with such close tolerances as today's engines
its not uncommon to blow a carburated engine
I know a guy who on his first time to the track w/ nitrous had a backfire that blew a hole in his lid, melted the k&n, had a dent in the hood from where the clip was, and later found out that he warped his heads.
strangely enough, his MAF survived
I personally would not put nitrous on a daily driver.

I've gotten that too.
Remember though, they used carb's, tuned via air/ fuel ratio guages etc etc etc.
Nowadays we have, rev limiters, timing retarding devices, more knowledge, better plugs, fuel injection etc etc etc (even though most of those things were available back in the day).
Technology advances over time.
Back in the day sure it worked but now it is better.
But honestly, technology is a big thing.
Hell, look at a honda insight? (I think that is it) Isn't that the car that will see 71 mpg on the highway, technology rules!!!!Race car - gone but not forgotten - 1997 firebird V6

I think its important to say that guy w/ the backfire was running a shoddly installed wet kit, so you may not have such a problem.2001 75th Anniversary V6 Pewter Firebird w/ Chrome Wheels, T-Tops, & Y87
Mods: Free Ram Air, !Silencer, Holley Filter, Full 3\" Hooker Catback, 3\" Cat
Best time: 15.095 at 90.00 MPH with a 2.127 60\'

You're going to blow your car up.
You're going to blow your car up.
You're going to blow your car up.
(hey, I'm over 40 and I missed out on telling you earlier, so I had some catching up to do!!!)
Seriously though, you should be fine.
Running lean is more of a problem than "blowing up" anything, with a dry kit. You'll only melt a hole in a piston or two if you run too lean too long. No cool explosions though.\'98 A4 Camaro v6->v8 conversion, and STS kit next
v6: 13.6 Powerdyne, 13.2 150 shot, 13.8 120 shot, 14.3 85 shot, 15.7 stock
v8(na): 12.18@113, 392rwhp
Moderator on www.mtfba.org and www.frrax.com (Road Race & Autocross)
Car pics, TN Region SCCA

Actually with my dry kit I have had cool explosions :D
Big backfires out the intake.
I ripped a hole about 2-3 inches in the rubber elbow of my slp cold air kit once, blew my mat sensor out, nitrous spewed from all sides of the hood and the car died.Race car - gone but not forgotten - 1997 firebird V6
