• nitrous backfire ruined my night at the track --pic--

Well, here's how I think it happened. Thanks to my wonderful $170+ MSD paperweight (I mean window switch), I d*mn near grenaded my engine. I was going to spray off the line (100 shot, wet). I get all staged and ready. Go time, well, bogged off the line so the rpms dropped probably to around 1500, still floored and the window switch isn't working so the nitrous sprays. I guess since the rpms were so low the fuel must have puddled somewhere. The nitrous backfire blew the air temp sensor out, ripped the rubber elbow off at the CAI, and shot the two cone filters off the end of the CAI.

So far I've noticed no other damage. I duct taped (never leave home without it ;) ) the elbow and put the filters back on (I think I ran over one of them). Made the drive home ok. I'll try to put some pics up tomorrow.

New nitrous time: 24.454 @ 49.14

At first I had no idea what happened, but I knew it wasn't good. I coasted while I radioed my brother who was in the stands. I said, "Is anything leaking?" He said, "nothing's leaking." I checked the instruments and they all looked good, so I putted the rest of the way down the track. I got back to the pits, popped the hood, and saw the damage. Didn't realize the filters had shot off until some guy came up and said "the tech picked up two round things off the track." My bro checked the end of the CAI, and sure enough, no filters. Had to walk up to a tech and say "Umm, I think someone picked up my filters..." Kinda embarassing.

Anyway, no other problems so far, calling SLP on Monday to see about two more filters and a new elbow. I might be able to get the elbow for free, since the elbow that was on there (and came with my CAI) wasn't the right one. No more juice till that Harlan window switch arrives.

This is the problem about wet kits.
Sorry this happened to ya.
The fuel puddled at such a low rpm and BOOM!!!
You might want to also add a push button switch on the shifter so that if something like this happens again you will not have it activated at such a low rpm.
I know the window switch would have prevented it but so far we are having no luck with that.

I did something similar once. I blew out the temp sensor, busted a 2+ inch hole in the rubber elbow but didn't blow the air filters off.

Check all the plugs also

Had this happen to a friend of mine.

Had a 99 3.8 Firebird, just put on the nitrous kit. It was a wet kit, and he purged w/ the nitrous off (at least that is the theory).

Gas puddled up, and at the 60' mark we heard a loud pop.

K&N melted, blew open his lid, clip from the lid made a small dent in his hood.

Car never ran the same, he found out later that he had warped his heads in the backfire. He traded in the car for a v6 Cougar.

I hope the damage isn't as bad for you.

One reason why I wouldn't touch nitrous for a daily driver (esp not a wet kit). You can run for years & never have a problem. But all it takes is one mistake to cause some serious damage.
