  • Nitrous Dyno with M5

I'm hoping to dyno soon with the NOS 5175 kit installed, but I have a question about what gear to dyno in. I know the speed limiter kicks in in 4th gear, which is also the optimal dyno gear, but that is effectively the same thing as hitting the rev limiter isn't it? If it kicks in below ~5200 rpms the window switch won't stop the juice and the car will run lean. Should I dyno in 3rd instead or am I wrong about this whole thing? With 3.23's at what rpm does the limiter kick in in 4th gear? Thanks for any help.

For manual you need to dyno in 4th gear for correct numbers.
Hold off and buy the hypertech unit, you have a 00 model so it is available.
Remove the speed limiter and then go back to the dyno.
If you do it in 3rd then you will get false numbers
If you do it in 4th you will hit the speed limiter, run lean, and possibly cause fatal problems to the engine :(

When you dyno in third, will the numbers be lower or higher? The reason why I ask, I had my car dynoed about a year ago for cheep, but they did it in third gear and the numbers seemed low. I want to get it done again, but haven't had the extra money. I guess you get what you pay for.

I don't think the numbers will be off too much between the two gears, but they are different. Last time I went I dyno'd in 4th and got 183.1/220.5, and then did it in 3rd and got 183.7/213.2. Pretty close. I can't say if the numbers will be consistently low or high, but my torque number was lower and my hp number was a little higher.

I just pulled out my graph and looked at it and it looks like the limiter kicked in at about 5100 rpms. Does that sound right? If so I could set the window switch to cut off at 5000 and I'd be ok.

Mostly I was curious if the speed limiter activated the same way as the rev limiter. I guess it does. I'll be looking into the hypertech I guess.

You dont need to dyno in fourth. You can use third. But like said, the numbers will be off. But why are you dynoing your car. Is it for bragging rights to say I have this much HP. Because if it is that is stupid. I dyno'd my car so I can see what works. Its a good way to see your improvement when you do more modification and dyno next time. So yes the #'s will be off but sometimes we have no choice. Dyno it in third because even though the #'s are off its still nice to know what works.

Or try unhooking the abs sensor and the Vss sensor and dyno it like that.

I don't think wanting to know how much power you are putting to the wheel is stupid. Last time I went I was curious to know how much power I had with my modifications at the time, and now that I have the nitrous and a few other things I want to see how much I gained. It's one thing to say "I'm running an 85 shot" and another to know how much power that 85 shot is actually giving you. It's not for bragging rights, just my own curiousity. If I do go and dyno in 3rd, I guess it's good that I have a 3rd gear pull to compare it to.

Yeah its not stupid to see how much power you are making thats not what im trying to say. Im just saying for accurate numbers dyno in fourth. But thats diffucult for us to do. So If you just want to see how much improvement you have made compared to your last dyno then dyno in 3rd.

if his car is anything like mine, unhooking the VSS will limit him to a 4500 RPM redline
