I have a friend that told me that having nitrous hooked up on a street car is illegal. He told me that a friend of his got like a $400 ticket one time for it. said that it was against federal law to have nitrous. i think that he's mistaken. does anyone know if this is true or not?

it varies by state.
but it is not illegial in all states. some require a permit, others require the bottle disconnected, when on public highways.
I don't think its illegial in TX, call TNT and ask them (Texas Nitrous Technology)

As many car clubs and organizations/performance shops as there are in Texas I would say it's legal in TX. I don't know about NY however. I think James went so far as to get a license to transport Nitrous Oxide, he'd probably be best to answer this question.2001 Firehawk #155 of 504 -M6
437 RWHP / 404 RWTQ -Dynojet (heads/cam)
12.34 @114 mph 1.7 60\' (bolt-ons only)
12.47 @116 mph 2.0 60\' (street tires, heads/cam)

its prolly only illegal if you have the bottle full i kno in california my buddy almost got a 1000 fine but his bottle was empty the cop told him he was lucky and someone claims where im from that its "legal" if you have nitrous stickers posted visible at 360 degrees, however others have told me i also lucked out when a cop stoped me and didnt see tbe bottle cuz its $100 a pound of N02 you have in the tank, but wether legal or not its not something you want a cop to see cuz its just askin for trouble..so really only way to fully kno would be to ask a cop if you feel up for it lol94 Pontiac Firebird-V6
-NxWetKit,RamAir,MSD Dis4, Coils,&Wires,DynomaxExhuast w/testpipe,NittoDR\'s&DunlopSPort5000s,17\"CrEagleAl loys,TransgoShifKit/VetteServo
91 Jeep Wrangler-5.7 Chevy350
-6\"ProComp SuspensionLift,M/T BajaClaws35x12.5,& more goodies

Well, in
NJ you MUST have a permit to carry nitrous.
I have one from department of health and senior services.
I contacted the state about it.
It specifically says for racing.
It cost nothing, it is good for 2 yrs. Updated automatically with new application sent every 2 yrs
I can transport it and have it within reach of driver. I can not have the bottle (s) on.
In NY, all I was required to do was supply the permit and they did not question it.
Some states require bottles out of reach of the driver.
Depends on your state.Race car - gone but not forgotten - 1997 firebird V6

i called a speed shop here (s&k speed) in long island ny (im in queens),and they told me its not illegal, that there was a limit to how much you could carry, somewhere like a hundred lbs.was told (obviously) that if you were cought racing then it comes into play.the owners are regulars at etown and have i believe they have a racing team,so they should know what their talking about.id like to know for sure from someone in the govt though....who to call?99 3.8 a4,Xenon kit, eagle 077,wingswest wing, halo headlights,gen3 altezzas, clearlenses,SLP flowpac,Predator ram air hood,RKsport carbon grille,POS flowmaster 3in catback,160 hypertech 160stat http://www.thenebula.com/carpics/pics3/MVC-015S.JPG

David, I know in Texas you can't get in trouble for having it, or even having a nitrous system on your car. HOWEVER, racing on the street (with or without nitrous) is what they'll nail you for.www.fullthrottlev6.com THE SOURCE!

Can a tank rupture due to a rear end collision, yes.
Is nitrous flammable... no, it is an oxidizer.
