well if your line points out of your car ud see the nitrous spray in a white cloud, when the tank is low on pressure it doesnt usually produced the "smoke" as u called it

I don't know about maryland but here in Phoenix with the air being so dry sometimes you cant see it purge at all.

The cloud is liquid Nitrous oxide vaporizing when it decompresses, the purge is to get the vapor out of the line so when you spary it hits harder and if your line to your bottel is long it will be harder to get the liquid gas to you engine.
The long line will cause the liquid to vaporize before it can get to you purge.

Seeing a cloud depends on many different factors.

Amount in the bottle is one.

The biggest factors though are humidity and temp.

The BEST weather is a cold humid day.

I have had twin 30 foot clouds of nitrous come out the bottom of my hood.

              What weather were you in?
How many lbs were in the bottle?
