  • need help, Nitrous problems...

OK, I finally got the NOS 5175 installed on my car about 2-3 months ago and I've gone through 2 1/2 bottles on my stock spark plugs with no problems...car always ran strong, period. I got around to putting my NGK tr6 spark plugs gapped at .35 in today and went to the track tonight. I was sick after waiting in line to race for close to an hour when I came off the line and the car started sputtering, but spinning, when I sprayed off the line (spinning is normal...the track has been redone and a little slick lately...I've done the same thing before with no problems). I let out and got a SES light flashed at me for about 45 seconds or so, but it went off before I could get back around to use my scanner. My question is this: How can everyone run those spark plugs and say they run great, when a friend of mine and I have both used them, and his SS did the same exact thing, which has caused him to almost sell his kit. Would those plugs do that and has anyone else had this happen? We checked the gap on every plug but I think it might be my wires. That's a little strange to upgrade to better plugs and it just cause the car to fall on its face.

My reason for ranting this late is because I remember my friend had the same problems with the same SES light, and almost an identical kit as mine...the only thing I changed were the plugs and I went from running a 14 flat spinning hard, to an 18.2 coasting through 75% of the track...Any ideas? I'm tempted to try putting my stock plugs back in or gapping the tr6's to the stock gap...I'm lost.

Could it be that one of the spark plugs didn't get screwed in tight and now your misfiring on a cylinder which is causing your car to fall flat on its face? Or maybe a faulty plug?

What was the SES? Have you had it scanned? Your original plugs are the "better" plugs most will say because they were platinum. But the NGK is better for nitrous, and you do need to run the smaller gap so the higher cylinder pressures won't blow out your spark. I can't see this one being the spark plugs' fault....Do you or anyone you know have Autotap so you can monitor some WOT blasts?

Well, when we put the spark plugs in, we may have messed up a wire, because one looked loose when I came back around from that run. The SES light flashed at me all the way down the track, but when I got back around to pick up my timeslip, it went off. I scanned it and the only code it was showing was the code for my catalytic convertor being off. What I dont understand is the whole night I never had a problem until I sprayed. I don't know anyone around here with autotap, but a few of my friends thought it was misfiring, so when my new wires come in Tuesday, I'll find out more. I talked to my friend with the SS and I think he's going to take his out and try spraying a few times after we talked about what happened. And yes, I would probably say the stock plugs are better, but I'm not sure how much a set would be for new ones.

If one of the spark plugs didn't get screwed in tight, would it run fine all motor, and then cause that to happen when I spray?

Update-Could be multiple misfires, that's what the SS was reading when they scanned his codes. Any idea how to solve this?

              Check the plugs
              Check the gap
Do not run stock plugs n nitrous
Make sure they are tightened into the block
              Use dielectric grease
              Check the wires

I finally got my wires changed last night, and we had messed up a wire or two changing the plugs. I took it out last night when we got through and sprayed it and it's back to normal. Thanks everyone.
