my insuracne company knows everything i did to my car, they said as long as i didn't change the motor for a V8 everything would go down as custom equipement. that why my car is covered for $16,000 and i pay a little bit higher payment but its still cheap then a V8 worth 16,000

1DV6, what happens if you get into a wreck and the cops see that you had your nitrous hooked up... cant your insurance company drop your policy and not pay a penny if they know about that?

I think it would depend on what kind of accident you were in. If you were racing and crashed, then I'd say you're screwed (which you kinda are anyways, most insurance companies will crank up your premium or drop you after that even without nitrous. But if someone rear ends you or something like that, I don't see how they could possibly say it was the nitrous!

I'm assuming your parents are paying for the insurance. If you wrecked the insurance company would probably not pay for anything on the car. It's like swapping a v8 into your car then not telling them. They don't like that at all. Then they'll either jack up your rates incredibly high meaning high risk insurance for your family or drop your parents insurance all together. Which would probably create 10 to 15 years of insanely overpriced premiums.

I'd say they won't be too happy knowing your driving around with a high pressured combustable gas sitting over top your gas tank. But hey, that's just my opinion.

Give the insurance company an anyomous call and ask them questions about it. That's the only way you will know for sure. Just about everything cool you want to do with the car would piss them off though.

Oh to answer your question about if its legal to have or not. In some states it is legal to have it without a permit as long as it's not hooked up. But what's the fun in that? But that doesn't mean your insurance company will agree with it.

just one of the reasons my tank is so easily accessable ;) ...fo rwhen i used to street race...if i ever caused an accident...or was involved in one...i could disconnect my tank in 5 seconds...i guess they would then have to prove i was using it...and not simply transporting it...which is 100% legal...fortunately i was never put to that test...but like i said...i had cops and claims adjusters look in the car with the bottle completely hooked up and nobody ever said anything to me...if you're that concerned about it though...i would only hook it up if you're planning on using it

How much more did your premiums go up James? I'm looking into something to cover my turbo. As it stands right now, if I wreck it they act like it's not there. That's not good considering the parts for the car are almost worth half the cars value.

What they don't know.... doesn't hurt me.

I don't tell them.

I used to roll up in the chevelle with a VIN # saying it was a 307.... but it shook the living snot out of the state farm agency They knew it.... wasn't stock.... and there was no problem there :D

I dunno guys, i dont know of any insurance company that would drop you for modifying your car. Major things like engine swaps, from a V6 to a V8, yes, but saying "they will drop you for nitrous" is like saying they will drop you for swapping a stock 5.0 mustang motor with a blown 351. Its still a V8, and thats what most companies go with. Hell, i had a friend who wrecked his 85 5.0 mustang, and he had a 450hp DSS 306 in it, and the insurance still paid fine, and they just said they were now listing his car as "High performance". His premium went up slightly.

YOu probalbly would only have to list it as high performance.

This is a question for someone who WORKS in insurance, not an internet message board.

Heres what you do:
1)Call insurance company
2) Dont tell em its you
3) Say "Hey, im thinkin about a policy, I have a camaro, but it has a Nitrous Oxide system, would i have to list it as high performance or anything, or doesnt that matter?"
4) Write down what they say.
5) Show parents

I figured it would go up quite a bit. I might as well insure the car as a $15k car. I'll have to talk to an agent. I'm with Allstate too.
