Ok so i have been researching relays and i have some questions...

at first i had no clue what the friggin relay was supposed to do, but now it seems that a relay is an electonic switch that allows for more power to be Outputted to a device than a normal flip switch right?

so does that mean that if i were to get a flip switch that was bulkier, that I could use that instead of a relay?

as far as i know, your relay is meant to be hooked up to two hot wires and two grounds, the first set trigger the relay which provides a closed circuit to the other set to power a device correct? so that means that in nitrous, you want to run all of your safety switches in line after your master switch then the relay and ground it, then connect the power and ground to the relay and the power to the solenoid and ground that, so that when the first set is closed, the second set gets closed as well... am i correct? lol

the relay allows your low current control loop to use small ratings on the switches. The relay connects the low current to the high current output, and energizes the noids when this happens.

Some things like FPSS's and Window switches are hard to find in 30 amp sizes.

You don't want to run too much voltage into the cabin and into a switch. Relays are AWESOME! You learn to love them..

so can any of you help me with this diagram?

does the hot wire run to the 30 pole? does that wire have all of the switches on it? and then ground 87?

then have just simple, power-toggle switch-85 86-ground? circuit

im confused...

30=?
85=?
86=?
87/87a=?

what do the poles mean and what goes on them? thanks alot guys... im having trouble with this no matter how much i read...

oh and that diagram is a drawing i made of what is on the side of the relay itself...

i think that 85 and 86 are the neg and pos of the coil right? so if you power 85 and ground 86, you will activate the other circuit... so my arm switch would be on the 85 and 86 circuit. and everything else on the other one?

A relay that holds 40a isn't a relay.
What you have is a selonoid by the schematic.
2 poles means you can have 2 power in puts or out puts on your switching device.
85 and 86 apply power through the coil.
The coil magnitizes and moves the armature, the armature moves the contactors.
The coil and contacts are not eletricly linked, just mechanicly. You might want to wire the selonoid through a relay because that noid might take up to 3 or 4 amps to work. That could be more than the switch you want to use can handle.
30 is your circuit, with power not applied to the niod coiles the contactors stay as 30 sending power to 87a if the coil is energised it will switch and send power to 87.
You can wire it for a circuit that is normaly opened or normaly closed.
Did you look at my 3 stage by any chance?
It's not for beginers, more for those with an eletrical enegineering degree of some kind.

so what should i hook the NC 87a to? should i just leave it unconnected, because there is nothing that i want to power, it is just switching the solenoid from off to on..

Good reply. One note: poles are always the inputs Throw is normally the output. For example, a double pole single throw switch. That's just a little EE background for everybody, free of charge

Thats a 2 way relay for headlamps.
85 and 86 turn on the solenoid and switch the relay output from 87a to 87. It is made to go between two circuits. Say 87a would be low beam bulbs, 87 would be high beams.
30 would be your input current.
It will work like a normal relay if you leave 87a unconnected.

i get it now.... but this is the relay that came with my nitrous kit, what could i use the 87a for? maybe a red light to show that the nitrous is off? lol

also, do i put the window switch, FPSS, and wot switch right after the arming switch on the positive wire? or so i put them in place on the ground wire? do they go before or after the relay? i know it probably doesnt even matter but wouldnt it be a little more precaution to have them before the relay? if that makes sense....

oh and do i set them up in series? as in...

positive WOT switch power to 12v source, WOT ground to window switch positive input, windows ground to fpss positive, and then the fpss ground to the relay? and so on...

You could have your safe switchs cut power to the relay or open its ground circuit.
I say make it so they cut power to the niod so that they can't ever be buy passed by a false ground.

exactly thats what i meant, but again, do i set the switches up in series?
thanks

You want to set up your safey switches so any one of them can open and cut power to you nitrous and fuel noids, through relays, contacts what ever.
If you parrell say an oil and fuel pressure switch one could open and the relay would still get power through the other.
