  • Timing for nitrous

I have been told many times to retard the timing to run nitrous, but how much? I am not doing it, a shop is. How much should I tell them?

    TIA

    Re: Timing for nitrous

how big of shot are you running? how much to retard depends on how much knock you are getting from your nitrous. You might not have to retard it at all. lol I was watching horsepowertv on spike once and they were putting nitrous on a mustang. The guy said for every 50hp you should retard it 2 degrees. I dunno about that but that is what he said.

Every car is different though, you need to find out if you are seeing any knock before you retard it, you might not have to do any retarding.

James ran a 120 Dry shot on a stock tune very successfully.
I ran a 85 Dry shot on stock timing without any knock.

I've heard a rule of thumb for 2* every 50HP too, but I didn't get any knock at all and monitored it closely.

Cool. Thanks guys. I had heard it was 2* for every 50 hp, but the guy that told me that was old school and always worked on carburated motors so I didnt know if it held true for our newer cars as well.

I am going to start with a 50 shot then a 75 and finally a 100. I am starting small to see how the motor reacts and then move up slowly. I MIGHT even do a 120 if everything is picture perfect cuz I already installed a 255lph Walbro fuel pump and I have 36# injectors ready to install as well. :D

I probably wont retard it at all for the 50 or 75, but I am getting a custom dyno tune when I go for the 100 shot with the bigger injectors and I will ask the technician about it then.

          Stick with stock lb/hr injectors.

          I run 19's here.

I also run STOCK timing. Currently 100 wet..... ages ago 120 dry.

If the day is going to be hot then I have been known to add some 100 octane cam 2
