Hello everyone, I am trying to get some more hp out of my basically stock 3.8 with almost 100k miles. The only things I have fone so far is SLP loudmouth exhaust and a spec stage 2 clutch and a new 5 speed tranny cause I blew the reverse out of the old one. I was just wondering if it would be safe to buy the kit for our cars and run a small shot (maybe 75 at the most) with that many miles on the engine. I don't want to do alot of cam/head work which will mess with my mileage and throw codes. I'd rather just have the power when I need it. Also, if it is safe, If I were to spray like once or twice a week would it drastically reduce my engine's durability? The kit im thinking of getting is the NOS dry kit from ftpp.net, would this kit have everything needed to spray safely? I know I'll need certain new gauges and a few other odds and ends I just want to be sure nitrous is the way to go for me.

Re: nitrous and engine life
I'd do it even with 100k on the clock, thats just me. The NOS 5175 comes with everything you need except a window switch. You'll need NGK TR6 spark plugs gapped at .035 too.
Nitrous is not 100% safe, no nonfactory power adder is or will be. Will it decrease the life of the motor? Well, that depends on how much you use it, but yes it will decrease the life of the motor overall. However, if you get all the safety stuff and do it right, your chances of doing damage are pretty slim.
Check this out, it should help you with most of your questions:

Supporting mods MUST BE DONE:
1. Cat-back exhaust
2. Cold air intake
3. TR6 spark plugs gapped at .035
Now that the motor is breathing...
NOS 5175 kit is highly regarded and recommended by most people on this site and it can be easily upgraded to a wet kit. I converted my 5175 to a wet kit and absoluetely love it.
4. Get a window switch. This enables the nitrous to spray within a certain rpm range. Always a good safety feature. I blew up my intake cuz I didnt use a window switch, they are worth every penny.
5. Get a Fuel Pressure Safety Switch (FPSS) Very important. Most kits come with them.
6. Get a bottle warmer.
7. Run 92+ octane gas when spraying.
Recommended Items for nitrous:
1. Fuel pressure gauge
2. Nitrous pressure gauge (bottle mounted or in-car pod mounted)
3. A good dyno tune to retard your timing and adjust A/F ratio
4. For anything more than 85 dry shot upgrade the fuel pump to a 255lph
5. Anything 125 and up get bigger injectors (dry shot)
With a wet kit you can just add a bigger fuel jet and not have to worry about a fuel pump or bigger injectors as much. Although a higher flowing pump is still for a good idea for a wet kit above 100 shot.
Just my 2 cents.
Still do a search though, cuz that is just the basics. There is a TON of info on this board. Good luck on the project!sigpic

Re: nitrous and engine life
your reasons to opt for nitrous are well suited.
should you choose to cross over into the dark side, there is no turning back. you will be hooked. nitrous to a performance enthusiast is like crack to a junkie (just look at how much i spent on nitrous refills in the last few months).
do as much research as possible (if you get any sleep at night, you aren't researching enough) here and at ls1tech.com and this is an interesting read with pictures from a reputable site... http://www.gmhightechperformance.com/tech/0211sc_nos/
