  • super high mileage nitrous?

    1997 RS 3.8L M5

my car have VERY high mileage 201,xxx but are mostly highway miles AND the car was VERY well maintained(i have like $6000 in maintanece reciepts for it) no mods to the car.. has the original clutch.. and with over 200,000 on the original clutch i KNOW the car was very easy driven...(it was driven by an older lady NO BULL... my dads known the owner since they bought it new in 97)

i'm the 2nd owner of the car

i'm planning on swapping out the clutch.. and doin a K&N or moroso intake kit.. maybe headers... for now(i have ALOT more plans)

but i was wondering if i put in a new fuel pump.. could i run a 100 shot? i know to pull 2* of timing per 75HP shot....i'm guessing the only way to pull timing on this car would be to run an MSD style box?

could i get away with running a 75HP shot if i ran say 93 octain and an octain booster on stock timing??

I would worry about the bolt ons before even thinking of nitrous right now. Get the intake and exhause taken care of first and then start nitrous stuff.

There are a lot of threads already and stickies on starting out with nitrous and what is needed. Read up and then get back to us here in the nitrous section after you have spent some money preparing for nitrous.

Simply put, nitrous stresses an engine and a 100 shot is pushing the upper limits on our cars....I don't know if I would chance especially if it was my only car. That's just my 2 cents....take it for what it is.
      Old Car = 12.679 @ 106.5 on 150 dry shot.
      New Car = 2010 3.6l 304hp Camaro

this will be the 3rd car i've had nitrous on... .. but the others were lower milage.. and SBC's... which ment just pulling 3* with a timing light and going for it...

i have another car.. my 4x4.. this camaro is my toy.... i'm savin up for a real deal build.. wiht forged bottom end, stage 3 heads/cam/injectors, supercharger/ect.. but for now i wanna just have alittle extra go...

i've done ntohing but built carbed SBC's before.. so this electronic FI V-6 stuff is just throwing me for a loop

If it were me, I'd wait until you did the full motor build to put any juice to it. Its got so many miles on it, that I'd be afraid of blowing out the bottom end.

also you can pull timing by using HP tuners or DHP.

with 200000 miles your compression is prolly shot, n20 thrives off compression, so I doubt it would be very effective and probably lead you quicker to the eventual end of the motor.

the car doesnt burn any oil.. so i don't know... its been pretty damn cold out.. it warmed up alot today i'm gonna go ahead and do a compression test and see... my last 96 3800 camaro was something like 165-170 compression or so.. i don't remember exactly...

              165-170 good numbers?

nitrous has a nasty habit of exploiting the weak points of an engine, and with 200,000 miles, i expect you might have a weak spot or two... i definately wouldnt risk it

Hmmm......yeah, I would :D But its not a very good idea.

If you do decide to spray it, I'd have it compression checked, leak down check, radiator flush, tranny fluid flush and rear diff fluid change just to make sure everything is insync and working properly.

running nitrous on 130,000.... i've seen alot of guys doin it no problems...

                      anyways...

my car was driven to and from chicago 5 days a week on the interstate (200miles/day) for like 2 or 3 years...

i have like $6000 in maintanece reciepts for it.. hell i have records of EVERYTHING that was ever done to the car... it had the rear dif serviced not to long ago, along with the trans(M5) fluid changed, cooling system was flushed.. ect.... minor stuff i would have let go was fixed(like leaky valve cover or leaky oil pan gasket) ,oil was change every 3000...

i think i'll go ahead and do a leakdown and compression test... and see what i come up with...

i was told just because it has 200,000 on it.. doesnt meen it has 200,000 miles worth of wear on it.... i myself i have taken apart engines with 120,000+ miles on them.. that look like they dont have much over 50,000 on them... but i've also taken engines apart with 80,000 that are like HOW THE HELL WAS THAT STILL RUNNING!!!

if i get a stretch of 2 or 3 warms days i'm gonna change the clutch on it before i do anything.. with 200,000+ on the original clutch.. its gotta be about done..

i may just run it with a 75HP shot and just have fun ... should be pickin up a GTP shortblock pretty soon to start my build anyways...

Thats not bad at all. I put down 156 on a Mustang Dyno and my car only had 73k at the time.

                            Re: super high mileage nitrous?

i decided to just run the piss outta this 3.8L.... then i'm gonna go with an LT-1 T-56 swap... should have the $$ by mid january to pick up a donor car(which middle of winter.. there will be quite a few)

of what it would cost to make a great running V6.. while i like the idea... is more money than i wanna throw at it...

should be able to pick up a donor for $1500.. and have most of the parts i need...

I have the Y87 package on my car.. so all i'm missing is the V8 and 6 speed...

And the PCM, wiring harness, K member, front suspension, sway bars, gauge cluster, 1 piece driveshaft...

It'll turn into a bigger project than you realize. You could pick up a car with an LT1 already in it for much cheaper and keep the sixxer for a DD. LT1 cars are rediculously cheap nowadays.
