I need some tuning advice, as well as some mechanical advice.

I have to pass emissions (sniffer) in the next month or I cannot renew my registration. With the cam in the car, and the apparent fact that I am burning some oil, I don't know how realistic this will be.

The car doesnt appear to smoke at all after its warmed up for a few minutes. I know guys with ls1's and that are running cams/heads etc, and still passing emissions.

I want to know, what can I do tunning wise to help me pass emission? I know I need to retard the timing a little, but how much and where? I need to turn my egr back on (which likes to screw with my timing, and I dont know how to control this) What should I do about the fuel tables? at cruise I am anywhere from high 13's to mid 15's afr...is this ok? should I be leaning it out more? I know too lean will cause you to fail to...

and (I know this is in the pcm section) but, what can I do mechanically to pass the sniffer to...I'm going to make sure the spark plugs are up to snuff, the wires are good...routine maintenance is all done on a regular basis...I am asking more about the tricks...I've heard of guys adding ethanol or something to the gas? X amount per gallon...or stuff like run the lowest possible octane for the test?

So I take it you have to run it on the rollers just like pre 96's ? What visable inspections do they do? I can't remember what they do with OBD I cars? Just tell us what the do and look for and we can go from there , just make a list. Here in AZ they just plug in their scanner in the OBDII port and thats it and look for codes thrown , don't even pop the hood or anything.

      Re: Passing the sniffer

I believe they do a quick visual inspection of the car, mainly looking for open cutouts and missing emissions equiptment I believe...other then that, it just goes on the rollers and that sniff thing goes in the tailpipe...

its a 96 car thats going on...over here its the same test for every car, except if you have a car that is 20 years old...then you dont need to pass emissions any more...

Well like me 6 more years to go for 20 years. WOW and I'm the original owner. I would keep your settings like you said around 14.7-15.0 idle and 13.0 at WOT, put the EGR on and plug it so it doesn't pull air in or out and keep your code set for NO ERROR reported and if thats your only problem the EGR won't affect any timing or A/F just mae sure you test drive it and see that it is running like you set it up, but don't get on it too hard since being cammed you want around a 12.5 A/F. And watch your KR , no need in blowing up your engine for a emissions test.LOL

          Re: Passing the sniffer

I was gunna leave all the other settings along..since I plan on changing the tune the second I get out of the emissions shop...but just for the part they do...idle scan and 40km/h scan...I should lean it out and make sure its around 14.-15afr...what about the timing? 20degrees? more or less? how about idle? Right now I have my idle timing set down at 10-12 degrees? I think I should be leaving the egr unplugged so that it works...I mean it is an emissions device, so I am sure it will have an impact.

I don't believe they look at DTC codes here and fail you...regardless I will be shutting them all down anyways...

Even if they did look for DTC codes ,as long as their deleted they don't show up, I would look at whatever timing is safe with your A/F. So just do some scans before you take it in, I'm sure you'll do fine just watch for KR when you do a 40km run.(which I have no idea how fast that is)LOL.

like 22 mph or something...anyone know how that alchol stuff works, or when I should be putting it in the car?...should it go in right before I take it, or should I be driving around with it for a bit?

I would put the timing and EGR back to stock. The AFR should be as close to 14.7 as you can get it. Then raise the idle a few hundred RPM.

Its a visual with a 40kmh roll on the dyno and a curb idle looking at the three gasses ,HC,NOX and CO.

                          Limits are:HC/58ppm

                          CO%/0.32

                          NOX/435
                          RPM limit 899 dilution 15.1

                          Curb idle HC/150

                          RPM limit 899 dilution 14.9

Can you explain this a little further? the guys on ls1tech have said to set the idle to 1200 rpm...what is the rpm limit of 899 reffering to?

and what is the visual inspection they do?

They just look for the stuff listed on the engine emission sticker, there is also an idle speed listed on the sticker.

                              Some places look others don't.

I tried cranking my idle up on the 94 TA and they said it was too high.

So I put the stock tune back in.

Get a used computer with the stock program and swap them out,if your cats good you should pass.
