Re: Best tunner besides HP tunners

The best way to tune and have support , for everything for your car is HPtuners hands down, having someone flash it for $100 a pop over a period of time will add up to what someone could of bought Hptuners for on their own. So if the vehicle is going to be kept and modded for awhile then Hptunes is the best investment. I used the maft(only corrected air flow)(sold to FirebirdGT for experiment) and the speedo recalibratior for about 2 years before Hptuners came out and I would rather pay the extra money hands down , with the extra functions hptuners has.

Re: Best tunner besides HP tunners

After having used the PowrTuner (3800/3100 GM stuff), HPTuners (3800's, my beater 96 lumina w/97 pcm and LSx cars) and SNIPER (for Mustangs) - HPTuners wins, HANDS down.

The benefit to the PT is that its virtually unlocked, and there is no credit system. However, you don't get access to many of the tables you would with HPT. One hinderance I came across was no VE table in the 98-02 F-bodies. The cable throttle cars had them.

Pay the price, it is worth it - trust me. Also, get the pro version. Makes things MUCH easier. LM-1+HPT Pro = win.

        Good luck.

Re: Best tunner besides HP tunners

I have to say that I am not exactly impressed with Hp tuners...if I had to do it all over again I would look to go stand alone.

The support team is good, they help you as much as they can and fast...I can't complain about the customer service any...but hp tuners for the v6 is lacking.

When you look at what we get compared to the v8 guys, and we are paying the same price, it's BS....in all honesty it feels like all you can do is adjust the afr and spark timing on our car...and there is only one way to do it.

we dont get any of the speed density or enhanced tuning stuff.

Hell, I haven't even figured out how to upload the RTT (real time tuning) operating system into our cars. (and I am pretty sure it is because we don't have the support for it)

I guess my input is a little biased though...most guys are able to use there MAF table and get away with what we have...I can't, and since we are only given one way to do things, Im kinda frustrated with it at the moment.

I've had to "cheat" to get things to work my way...and they apparently aren't going to be making any more tables for us from what I hear.

Maybe we should petition. Because I don't like the idea of paying the same amount for less support.

this is what has me a little irked. I understand there is less of a market for the v6s compared to the v8's, but we are paying the same price for the unit, same credits and all...but half the support.

now that being said, there are alot of useless tables IMO (probably because I have no use for them lol) but they could/should get our VE tables and everything speed density related up for us...this isnt limiting just me...this has forced the turbo guys maxing there MAF to go stand alone...v8's virtually dont have to go to a standalone system because of the support that they have, there pcm is essentially a standalone in itself with what is unlocked...

Eh, I suppose we should understand that if we wanted to go v8.. we could use the same HP tuners and not have to buy more tuning software. Or a lot of other different cars.. I imagine in the future I will have some type of z28 4th gen.

However, more support now, would be awesome.

This is why I chose a 02' LS1 and a 00' 6.0 GMC for 2 of my other choices out of the 4 I had to put on my lic. So I can go small block or big block.

I was thinking about maybe getting HP Tuners. I'm concerned after reading all this.

What features does HP Tuners lack that we V6 users need?

it's fine for 99% of the v6 crowd. Those that need more are ones that are pushing a ton of air via turbo and maxing the MAF out. There is no speed density tuning either via map available either as we are stuck with our current MAP sensors. Can't use a 2 or 3 bar MAP for the boost. Right now people have to "trick" the MAF in order for it to work and play with the fuel tables.

Hell, the only way my buddy adjusts the afr in his carb engine is by adding bigger jets until his speed starts to drop in the quarter mile. At least we can do better than that with hp tuners and a wideband.

Well if your not going all out with your car for around $200 you can slap in a JET stage 2 pcm module. I have most off the basic bolt ons and I can definitely say it made a world of difference. I tried some various chips that claim to give you this or that amount of power and mpg.But the JET module gets the shifting dead on in D and seems to make a great all around difference. According to JET the stage 2 requires you to run 91 octane. I haven't started running 91 yet but I will after a put a few miles on it with regular. Then will see if it's really worth it.

No offense, but jet chips are junk. All cars have a different airflow and variations that you just cannot tune without having your hands on the car. Like PCM for less just seems silly. I had a jet chip a long time ago before I started to actually learn about this stuff.

X2, before Hptuners I ordered the Venom 400 from RK Sport for $400 what a waste even tried their injectors which 2 locked open and almost burned up my engine bay, got full refund a nd a little extra from RK Sport. Hptuners has guys running in low 11's and dynoing over 450 to 650 WRHP so unless your going above that Hptuners will support just about eveything you need to do to your car. Best investment I ever bought for my car. Now who wants to buy my Venom 400 that 11 years old? LOL
