  • A4 tuning and TC lockup

so I remember reading about how we should not have our torque converters locked up while shifting...but what about inbetween shifts? would that damage the converter at all? I was thinking that when it is locked up there is no slip/very little slip occuring, so it would net higher MPH times and essentially make the car "faster"

so would setting up my TC tables like this be a problem?

    Consider this,

    My shift points:

    1-2 is 33mph/ 53km/h
    2-3 is 65/ 105km/h
    3-4 is 107/ 170km/h

Now, my TC table at the moment looks like this:

What if I made it look like this? Would that still damage the converter?

essentially what I have done (if I have done this correctly) is I have asked the converter to lock up only upon 100% throttle upon entering 2nd gear but release just prior to going into 3rd, then lock up upon entering 3rd, but release just prior to entering 4th, and then while in 4th, don't release....

any opinions on this? I would think it would be ok no? Transmission has to meet both speed and RPM for the shift to occur, so the converter should never be locked during the shift, only inbetween shifts?

I know a shift kit like my Transgo , makes the shifts not slip so the clutches last longer , thats why the car shifts so hard on WOT shifts. Then you can fine tune it using shift properties in Hptuners.

well irrc, I believe the converter is supposed to slip? but when it is locked it makes the transmission and the converter function as one, or something like that.

Like my shifts are firm now, but the converter slips on auto trannies, thats why at the track an auto will always trap lower then a manual car...but I have heard of cars locking there converters to increase there trap speeds. But I remember reading that if you didnt have a multi clutch converter you would kill your converter and trans very quickly...so thats why I was thinking, maybe lock it, but then release it a few mph before the shift?

Like my table there is at the extreme, I would back off the release point a few mph to be safe...

It would be best if you asked the maker of your converter if you can lock it up at full throttle. Most will say no. The only LSX ones you can lock at full throttle are multiple clutch converters.
