PCM swap questions!

have a '96 3.8l with 3.42 gears. to swap a used pcm, i would need a '96 that came from a car that had 3.42 gears? if its from a normal '96 then the shift points would be different or what? if it must be from a 96 with 3.42 then how can i find out if the pcm is from a 3.42 car or not (just buying from a salvage yard)? thanks for any help

you will need a 96 or 97 pcm with the same gear. Only way to know is to remove it from the car yourself and read the door codes to get the gear ratio code. Or get a 97 pcm and then have someone with hptuners adjust for the gears
