  • 160* Thermo Temp Guage 2001+

Anyone able to figure out how to fix the temp guage issue on 01+ with tuning as opposed to Dom's resistor trick?

If you are unaware, if you put in a 160* thermo after about 100 miles the temp guage flags, just stops working. Somewhat annoying. The fix is to put a 180k ohm resisor in place of the IAT sensor (thereby disabling it) which tricks the PCM to think ing the incoming air is -32 or something and then the low coolant temp is ok and the guage works.

(my numbers may not be accurate but you get the idea)

I ordered a 180 drilled for my 99. Am I going to get the ses light coming on now? I don't want that, I have no way to turn it off except the dealership, and I can't afford that.....

Doubt you'll get a light, but if you do its easy to turn off the SES light. Turn key to on position (without starting car) and remove the two fuses in the engine compartment marked PCM ignition and PCM something. There is one in each of the two fuse boxes under the hood (15A and a 10A). Leave them out for like 5 minutes then take the keys out of the ignition and replace the fuses. Start the car. See installuniversity.com for more info on resetting the SES light.

i'll get the SES light once in a great while after I put the 160 in. buts thats OBDI, OBDII might be more sensetive or something

          EDIT
come to think of it, I also have the resistor mod. I guess that makes this post worthless [img]graemlins/popcorn.gif[/img]

Theres no way to disable it.. the code that is set is about the fact that the engine is not heating up to temp as it should.. its not with the IAT, its more in the area of the sending unit for the temp gauge.

I have the 180* thermo with 4- 1/8" holes around it. have had no issues and the temp gauge is steadily about 4 notches lower than the stock reading on the gauge. I think its car to car, and all depends on the outside temp.

So the answer is just aftermarket temp gauge.

Well, I just use the 18K Ohm resistor in the IAT, its cheap - anyone need one? I have plenty.

So lets say I leave the 18k resistor, how do I compensate for not using the stock IAT sensor when tuning? I guess it goes back to how much of an affect does the IAT data have on the fuel and timing, etc.

The problem can be solved with programing. I hade the 160* and it would throw a code and the gauge would stop working. So I called Hypertech and they said on my car the 160* was too low. I put in a 180* and the problem was solved.

Then I got HP Tuners. I put the 160* thermostat back in. I made a change to the DTC codes and everything worked great. I am at work right now but when I get home, I will post all the info you need to fix this problem. If you have tuning software, this is an easy fix.

OK, it took me awhile to get home but here is the info.

                            DTC Code:
                            128 - Coolant Thermostat

                            Stock is set to
1 - Mil on Second Error
                            and
                            SES Enable "On"

                            Change it to

                            3 - No Error Report
                            and
                            SES Enable "Off"

The temp gauge will work and you will not throw a code with the 160* thermostat.

                            Good luck.
