I'm just trying to figure out why it is that the big guys (Hypertech and Jet) seem to have no interest in developing products for the 97s. Is there something different about the 97 3800 engines?
Did we do something to offend them? Do they just not like us?

Yeah. I've been told that Texas Speed can also whip up a custom program. That just adds to my confusion. We know that the engine can be programmed because HPTuners, DHP, Texas Speed, and other small guys offer services. So why is it that Jet for example supports every V6 but the 97?
Do they know something about our computers that the smaller guys don't? Is there something unique to this year that makes it incompatible with their methods of ecm programming?

not really sure to be honest...but you can find custom tunes for cheaper then you can find jet or HPP for new in most cases.

I know, I know. I'm just a little bit nervous about using one of these guys because I'm not very familiar with them. This is my daily driver and I could easily see myself putting another 200K miles on this car, so I am very careful about the mods I do. More power is great, but that comes after reliability and driveability.

This thread has to be a joke. How anyone can overlook the dozens of posts on this very subject - including 1 not even 24 hours ago! - doesn't make any sense.
The fact is Hypertech and Jet are crap anyways. Even if they had them out for your car, they would be a complete waste of money.
the other years a certain product covers a "range" of them.
but 97 is one year. So cuts your number of potential customers in half compared to 95-96 or 98-99 or 00-02

No offense, but where's the joke? I'm new to this forum and am not a member of any F-body clubs. I'm just a lowly engineer who's not very familiar with the companies that some of you guys are mentioning and would like to gather info before I commit my very high mileage engine to be reprogrammed by a company I've never heard of.
I know the names Jet, Hypertech, and Superchips because I've seen them on TV and have read about them in magazines. I joined this site so that I could learn about what the TV and magazines were not talking about. I'm hearing good things about HPTuners and Texas Speed, but I'd like to learn more. I'm willing to keep an open mind, but I'd like to educate myself first.
I'm still stuck with the very simple question of what makes my ecm so different than the 95-96s and the 98-02s? That's all I really wanna know. If you could point me in the right direction to get the information I'm looking for including the post withing the last 24 hours I'd appreciate it.
...maybe I should have made the title of the thread "How are the 97s different from other 3800s?"

honestly if you are going ot spend the money, I would either get hptuners, or a tune from texas speed(which uses HPtuners to tune you computer)
other then speedo recalibration and speed limiter removal. Most peopel have not seen huge gains from hypertech power programmer.
and jetchip, doesn't even do speedo recalibrations.
I do not know the specific differences myself.
BUT...
in 97 that is the first year that the f-body interior and guage cluster changed. But overall its not that differnet then 95-96. Because those years can swap in a 97 PCM and use hptuners. Because it is not availible for 95-96s.
98+ is when the f-body went through several changes overall. Once again I don't know what changes there are in a 98-99 vs. a 97.
Now the '00-02 vs the a 97. From wha I understand, the difference is differnet TPS, IAC, since it is drive by wire vs. cable throttle. Also the injectors are differnets styles then the older ones. Also in like '01 I know ther were changes with the coolant sensor is differne to where 160* stat will cause a problem.

It's unlike GM to do anything for just one model year, but it's starting to sound like the 97s 3800 is just an engineering orphan. Like I said before, I'll take a deeper look at the HPTuner set-up. I am an engineer so the idea of crawling around my engine's internal code is kinda cool, but I think I need to do a lot of homework before I'm ready to twerk around with my baby's brain. Could you recommend a good book or website that has a nice "3800 tuning for dummies section?" I found Viper's site already and would a appreciate any other insight you might have. I am a bit disappointed to hear all the negativity about hypertech, though. I guess I shouldn't trust the guys on Spike TV so much.

Another custom tuner is Wester's Garage. He has a very good reputation. He is pretty well known in the truck world. If you hit some pickup truck forums you will hear his name a lot.
