Obtaining a PCM for my 99 A4

I ordered an update to my tune from Wester's and they are unable to find a PCM for my car.

They said they would keep looking or if I can find one I can send it to them.

So does anyone know where I can get an extra PCM for my car (1999 A4).

With my first tune from them they forgot to tune my car for my new 3.42 gears (and instead tuned it for my original 3.08). I have driven for a year like that and I finally decided I didn't like having to subtract 10% off my speed all the time. I would really like to find a PCM to send them so I can get my speedo recalibrated.

99 was the year GM screwed up the service numbers, that might be why they're having a difficult time finding one.

If they're looking for 9374997 tell them to look for 9361735 instead. I believe it was used in many 3.8 FWD applications that year. Or you can check with some salvage yards yourself.

why cant they just use a different year & reflash the OS?

There's something different about the hardware, that's what the service number indicates. There's also another number or letter code that designates the specific code that is flashed to the box, which would differentiate a Camaro PCM from say a Monte Carlo PCM of the same year.

Can I use 97 Camaro PCM on my 98 bird? does it matter if its M5 or A4 if im gonna use a HPT.

They're different service numbers. '97 is 16227797 and your '98 is 16236757.

Good news is your service number is shared by a whole bunch of GM vehicles.

So if you got a PCM out of any of those vehicles it should have the 16236757 service number. Then all you'd have to do is flash it. And no, there is no hardware (service #) difference between auto and manual for '98.

How does one go about finding out their service number? I'm trying to get a Junkyard PCM for my 99, but they want my service number and my alpha programming code. I don't know where to find the alpha code either. I need a little help on this if you all can steer me in the right direction.

It's for a 98 Firebird, I didn't check the transmission or anything like that, just saw it while looking for one for mine. That should work fine for ya, and it's like 7 bucks shipped. If you see on for a 99-02 3.8, lemme know about it.

Well the service number is printed on a big white sticker right on top of your PCM.

But since it is somewhat of a pain to unbolt and pull out from under the cowl I guess I can just link you to the handy service number cross-reference guide I put together. ;)

Ok, found my service code with a flashlight (and very strained eyesight), it wasn't any of those in your thread. As you mentioned in the link, there are some discrepencies on the 99 model. My service code is 09361735. Your thread says for 99, it should be 09374997.

So that confuses me a little. Is part number 09374997 actually part number 09361735, just with "09374997" on the sticker; or is part number 09374997 the correct number just mislabled as part number 09361735? I guess what I'm saying is this: Is my service number (09361735) the correct one to ask for when I try to find an extra PCM? Maybe you can clear this up for me FunkZ.

And on a different note....the junkyard wants to know my Alpha Programming Code. Does anybody know what that is? Is it just the Calibration ID number from here: http://calid.gm.com/vci/VINEntryPre.do ?

If you have the 09361735 on your PCM then that should be the updated service number and the correct one to ask for. The 0937 number was incorrectly labeled on some PCM's. The problem is when the service number search was done with the PCM remanufacturer to cross-reference platforms, it gave the 0937 number as being the correct one, which GM admits was a mislabel.

The junkyard is probably asking for the 4-letter code that is normally printed in the upper right corner of the sticker, to the right of the service number. You only need to match that code if you are going to take the junkyard PCM and plug it into your car and run it as-is. If you are going to have it flashed anyway there is no need to match that code, you only need the 09361735 service number, which should be found in many 3400 and 3.8 FWD GM vehicles from that year. Unfortunately I can't tell you which vehicles, because again, the PCM remanufacturer catalog I used to make the cross-reference page only listed the 0937 service number for the '99 Fbody.

Affirmative. Doesn't matter which vehicle the programming was intended for if you're going to overwrite it anyway. All you need is the correct piece of hardware, which can be obtained solely by using the service number.

To answer another question, yes you probably could swap some years where the service number didn't match and still be able to use it, but there might be some functions that didn't work exactly right, and could throw an SES. I would stick to the correct service number for the car unless you're trying to get around something in particular, such as using a '97 PCM in a '96 in order to use HP Tuners.

Ok, thanks for the info. My car currently has a PCM in it with the 09374997 service number (the first one Wester's sent me about a year ago). Is this actually the wrong PCM for my car?

Also, if 9361735 is for FWD cars, why is that the correct one for my RWD Camaro?
