  • Delete the cat? Tuning?

    Question on tuning.

Say one had a 1997 pontiac firebird which is NOT stock!

    Lingenfelter intake
    4200 stall
    Ported intake and heads
    Rk sport headers
    2.5 inch y pipe
    3 inch high flow cat
    3 inch mandrel bent exhaust
    slp loudmouth cat back

And at times a smidge of nitrous….

What would happen if I deleted the cat?
What check engine codes would appear?
If I delete the cat I have two choices – tuning or O2 sims
I think just the rear O2 sensor would get the O2 sim right?
If I delete it and I do not do tuning or O2 sims I expect a check engine light….. will this in any way, shape, or form affect horsepower, toque, timing, fuel or anything else?

My local v6 guys in NJ SWEAR by the delete the cat mod.

    Any comments?

    Thanks!

Deleting the cat will do nothing but give you more power and throw a post cat 02 SES.

oh and possibly make you fail inspection/emissions testing :D

Tuning to delete that code is VERY simple with HPTunters, and if you know someone w/ it I woudn't pay for a sim.

Overall it's getting rid of a restriction will make your exhaust LOUDER than it already is, pickup up some horsepower without hurting anything as long as there is no e-check!

maybe it reduces a little bit of backpressure, but thats gonna make your max power powerband a little higher in the RPMS

you woudnt get any hp by replacing 3" cat , maybe 1-2hp. yes , you will fail emissions and rasp comes with it. (could be killed by bullet mufler)

code p0420, thats an easy # to remember
but sometimes the post-cat sensor will be a different code #, especially on different vehicles

Buy HPtuners, or get someone local to buy it and let you use it all the time.

Sorry James but there is no excuse fo you to not have tuning software. :)

You guys have inspections in NJ? that sucks.
