if i have 96 pcm,and i want to get it tuned then y do i have to buy a 97? whats the difference between them?

because hp tuners cant tune 96 PCMs and it can tune 97 PCMs which are a direct swap into your 96. Mail order tunes with hp tuners can be found at texas-speed.com
PCMforless.com tunes for 96's, they will send you the pcm and you have to send your core back.

the programming code in the 96 is not cracked by the guys at hp tuners. Therefore hp tuners doesn't work for the 96 pcmsComment
