The black rectangle with the white grip around it (which can be removed via the access panel without opening the entire PCM) is the knock module.
I don't know where these companies get their misinformation from. ALL the 3.4 Fbody cars used flash programmable PCM's. It seems the confusion may come from the '92 year where there are 3 different PCM's listed for the Fbody, 2 of which are flash and 1 which is the older prom style. At least this is the indication as the two '92 and '93 are the same as '94-'95 and all have service numbers beginning with 16 and are 8 digits long, whereas the other '92 PCM is only 7 digits and starts with 122.
The Jet and Venom modules do not modify the stock PCM, they are external modules that tap into the wiring harness. The Jet module interfaces directly between the connector and PCM. The Venom taps off the TPS and MAP sensor wires. Both operate similarly in that they modify sensor input signals to the PCM to increase performance. From my understanding however the Venom only affects mid-throttle settings, and does nothing for WOT. If you want to get one of these easy-to-install add-on modules I would go for the Jet Stage 2 or nothing at all.
Hypertech used to make a Power Programmer for the 3.4 but it was discontinued in 1996. This is a hand-held unit that plugs into your ODB port and actually flashes the stock PCM with a performance tune. There is a very small chance you could still find one used in working condition. I have one and am satisfied with the results.
Fastchip can flash a 3.4 PCM with a basic performance tune and remove the speed limiter. They may also be able to correct for gear/tire changes and other things but I have heard from a number of people that they refuse to offer any custom tuning for these engines.
Then there's the MSD DIS4, Megasquirt, and F.A.S.T. but these are all more expensive units and not realy a plug-n-play install.
