Re: Check engine light? You guys know my problem??
Hi...mines a 96. I'm not sure if this will help you or not but this is what's happend to me. Its come on a couple of times....and freaked out I checked the owner manual and it said its usually a fuel/combustion/exhaust type of problem. The manual recommends switching to a higher octane gas and/or a different brand and letting a tank run through to see if that fixes it. So after I read that I added some fuel system treatment to my gas tank and filled 'er up with premium octane gas and the light went away about 1/4 the way through the new tank of gas. One time my SES light came on for no apparant reason, then went away after about an hour or so. Basically, I don't put much stock in that light. Its not really something I'd freak out about unless it stays on for a long time. Just my $0.02 :-)
Re: Check engine light? You guys know my problem??
its for your evap system. grab a Haynes manual to diag it or take it to a shop. Did you leave your gas cap loose or off with the engine running? if so, thats probably your issue....

I just do not know what to think about this statement
Re: Check engine light? You guys know my problem??
okay, maybe i would disregard my post in this situation. with the examply\e i was giving i don't know what code the it was throwing, because i never got it scanned. my car was running normally but the light came on. I didnt convey what the manual said very well so I went back and read it again. basically its saying if you use quality fuel it could correct the problem, which in my case it did (but we may be talking about two different problems here). sorry if i was vague and/or giving wrong info. i'm no mechanic just trying to pass along what worked for me.
taken from my owners manual, regarding MALFUNCTION INDICATOR LAMP (Service Engine Soon Light) (p 2-83 of my 1996 owner's manual)
"IF THE LIGHT IS ON STEADY:
You may be able to correct the emission system malfuncion by considering the following:
Did you just put fuel in your vehicle? If so, reinstall the fuel cap, making sure to fully install the cap. The diagnostic system can determine if the fuel cap has been left off or improperly installed. This will allow fuel to evaporate into the atmosphere. A few driving trips should turn the light off.
Have you recently changed brands of fuel? If so, be sure to fuel your vehicle with quality fuel (see "Fuel" in the Index). Poor fuel quality will cause your engine to not run as efficiently as designed. You may notice this as stalling after start-up, stalling when you put the vehicle into gear, misfiring, hesitation on acceleration or stumbling on acceleration (These conditions may go away once the engine is warmed up.) This will be deteced by the system and cause the light to come on.
If you experience these conditions, change the fuel brand you use. It will require at least one full tank of the proper fuel to turn the light off"
again, very sorry if i was giving wrong/irrelevant information.
