  • Chips VS Programmers

Ive got a 2001 Firebird 3.8 with The Austin SSRA kit, whisper lid (and kn filter), and American Thunder Flowmaster exhaust.

my next upgrade is definitely some tuning but im kinda dull in this area. If anyone knows Id like to know if youd invest in a programmer or if the Jet Stage 1 or 2 chips are worthwhile.

And does anyone know if these do anything?

      tune > anything.

chips are crap for the most part and programmers are a overpriced considering they dont do much.

get a mail order tune or find someone with hp tuners.

Well hptuners seems a bit much. whats the verdict on sending in the ecu to hptuners? also i hv seen that slp can do the same. whats the turnaround time? and does it help that much to justify the cost?

Not with a 3.8... Tune it.

Those just cheat the computer into thinking you have colder air. You could do the same thing, with greater efficiency with a tune.

mail order tunes can be done through texas-speed.com or pcmforless.com, if you just have basic bolt ons a mail order is fine, but if you are heavily modded then you need your own hptuners or dhp

I dont think you can send your ECU to hptuners? can you??

(either way, buying program is the best thing you can do.. think of it as a one time payment :D)

                  :rolls eyes:

On a mostly stock car like he has the hypertechs actually do pretty well and will easily pick up .3 in the 1/4.

However, the cost is not worth it...go with a mail-order tune from texas speed or PCMforless if you dont want to spend the ~600 dollars to get yourself into HPtuners and learn the process.

Hypertech actually has some new module out that looks pretty cool, but I havent heard of anyone trying it yet. It's basically like a g-tech pro and hpp3 put into one.

Is there maybe a way to get a OBDII-->USB cable, and then use some free or "obtainable" software to tune your car?

no, only two tuners available for our cars and they need to be purchased and a special cable used
