  • IAC Valve Sticking?

96 with TB cable ( NOT electronically controlled )

On start, the engine will not idle unless I throttle the engine. (So, I just let the clutch out at a higher rpm.)

After driving, the next stop the idle "sticks" at 1500 rpm. Drive until next stop, idles at 900 (where it is set). Next stop, maybe 1500 or 900. This continued all day yesterday.

I've have the startup idle problem a couple of times but not continuously for an entire day before.

BTW, when idiling it is smooth.

    Any other ideas?

So never at a higher RPM? Every dieing IAC Ive seen would Rev and DeREV at idle and damn near cut off. Maybe its just physically sticking and not failing. I think Id try WD where I could get it. Cables and all...

Rob, I had a problem like that. Took the IAC off I used seaform to clean it, or you can use brake cleaner etc. , but it took care of the problem. On mine I could see the carbon build up on it. I just sprayed it down and wiped it off a couple of times.

We can fix that permately too, if you want to. Thats what I did. Cleans up the engine bay.

And how do we do that? Without buying the block off plate?

For mine I deleted the codes with hptuners, then took the ends of the plates and welded nickels into open space to seal them up and just mount them back where they go. Then I just took the EGR off with the mounting plate and the engine lift bracket. Ziptied the oil dipstick to the fuel lines so it doesn't move. Makes for alot of open space and you can access your driver side valve cover and the coil packs easier.

Could I weld in nickles and then bolt the EGR back?

What would happen if I didnt tune out the EGR?

If you didn't have the EGR plugged in it would throw a code and you wouldn't pass emissons.

                    Emissions? LMAO! Im in FL!

Other than the SES coming on, will it affect performance or anything? Like will the PCM change the fuel ratio since it will see there is a prob with the EGR?

You need to search on that, I don't have any problems.

                        UPDATE:

Pulled the IAC valve Friday. The spring was all covered in black goo. Used CRC TB Cleaner, and put it back in. Had the same problem when first started, and then drove it a few miles. PCM reset, and have had no problem at all driving Sat. In fact the throttle seems better, no doubt now that the IAC valve is opening and closing properly.

I would recommend cleaning this valve also, if you clean the TB.
