OBD 2 on 1995?

[95V64ME]

I went to 2 of my local auto parts stores and asked them if they could
read my service engine codes. Both places said my 95 Camaro has a OBD2
connector and plugged there OBD2 reader into it. But nether could pull the codes? I though 95 was OBD1. The service people both said it's a OBD2 plug on my car. Any ideas what this is all about? Whats an OBD2 plug doing on my 95 and why can't they pull the codes ???

95 is OBD1 but I dont know if there diffrent connectors or not.

95 is a bastard version of OBD-I and OBD-II, that's what they could not pull the codes.

you run an OBD 1 scan using the OBD 2 plug, mine is the same way and i have had no problems getting the codes. they should have the right plug to scan it it looks like the ODB 2 but the pins are different.

so your saying for us 93-95 pcm guys we have to use a obd 1 scanner with a obd2 plug for it to pull codes?

not quite, the plug looks like an OBD 2 but isn't! OK like the scanner we use will scan OBD 1 and 2 we have a yellow plug for OBD 2 and a blue for OBD 1. they look the same but are pined different, and both will plug in. the parts store should know what you are talking about if you tell them that you have an OBD 2 style plug but the OBD 1 ECM, if they don't thin they don't need to be there selling you parts.

NO!!!!! it is an OBD 1 plug that looks like an OBD 2 they are pined different!!! ok go to you parts store autozone oreilly's what ever it may be just tell them that you have an OBD 1 system with the OBD 2 style port. thin you will See what i am talking about. its an obd1 plug that looks like an obd2 !!!!

in your 93 you will still have the OBD1 plug trust me ive owned all three years, 95 is the only year with the OBD2 port but still using a OBD 1.5 computer... its GM for you but thats what you get i guess!

so basically what it boils down to is that i'll never be able to get codes read, at least not from any advanced auto or autozone eh? :rant:

cuz i know that there are shops with much better scanners that have worked on my car before. the only problem is they charge like 50 bux for a simple scan.

you should have no problem getting your codes scanned its still an OBD1 based computer with an OBD1 plug, i read my codes with a matco scanner you just need to find someone with an OBD1 scanner and the autoparts stores dont have them usually

on ebay for like 500 bucks but thats a little pricey but you can see everything going on with the engine and i mean everyhting like every sensor that has a value will be displayed, i might suggest an actron scanner that is for GM OBD1 like this one it should work for you, i have it and it dosent work for my car but it may for yours... http://actron.com/product_detail.php?pid=16152
