  • P0440 Help Please

    Hi everyone,

I searched for info on the P0440 code and couldn’t find anything in the history. I tripped this code on Tuesday just as I pulled out of my work parking lot, went to Auto Zone had it read, cleared it, and then it came back today just after I started my car after filling it. The gas cap is tight and I ran and checked all fuel lines and wires from the tank to the motor, everything looks good. It is a 2002 3.8L Camaro with 70000 on it. I can’t see how this could be a vacuum leak because both times the light came on so fast the car didn’t have time to pull a vacuum and see if it held. Any advice or past history would be very much appreciated. Thanks

    Ray

      Re: P0440 Help Please

Hey Mr. Logger, ok was able to work the search and get the results right, when I searched on Tuesday I didn't get the same search screen asking for the spam 6 letter code. I checked all the threads that appeared with the search and the one you linked in. I work for GM at Milford, so on Wednesday I put a Tec-II to it. I actually printed out the P0440 Service Information and referred to it when I had the Tec-II on it. The only thing is I couldn't find a way to check the evap system with a Tec-II. The Service Information procedure calls for the use of a J41413 which I believe is the smoke machine. I was able to use the diagnostic feature of the Tec-II to monitor the purge valve and it was opening and closing. Is there anything that is a common culprit for this code on the Camaro? I hope it's not the canister, all the pluming is on top of the tank which is on top of the muffler. The service info on replacing the canister says to drop the tank, and the service info to drop the tank says to drop the exhaust.

I could swear the canister is behind the rear driver side wheel.

        Maybe that can help.

That's what I've heard but I took this picture when I was under the car Tuesday and it looks like the canister is on the forward top side of the gas tank. I'll spend some time tomorrow at work looking at all the service info on the purge valve, vent valve, and canister. I think I have a lead though, when I went outside after I last posted and fired the car up and just let it idle while I ran the lines with my hand, I wanted to see if I could feel a leak. Anyway after the engine reached temperature I noticed that the valve on the induction manifold right behind the throttle body on the driver's side, I think it is the purge valve, it comes off the manifold runs to a vacuum hose with a green cap on it (to hook up the smoke tester) which connects to a steel line on the driver's side fender.
Anyway when the motor got up to temp. I noticed that the valve start to make a rapid popping/tapping sound, I had my ear right over it and it was definitely coming from that valve, it sounded like there was a midget in there with tap shoes. Anyway, I pushed on the hose connected to the valve and the tapping sound would go away, as soon as I released it is would start right back up. It was pretty loud, I could hear it just standing in front of the car.

            Re: P0440 Help Please

Update, spent some time this morning looking over the service info and fuel tank plumbing schematic at work. Unfortunately, that is the front side of my canister in my first picture. The canister vent solenoid valve is connected to the canister with a small piece of tubing which is located on the back driver’s side of the canister; putting the vent solenoid in the top middle on the driver’s side edge of the tank. Now here’s the depressing part. I looked up the Labor Code J6441 (R&R evaporative emissions canister solenoid) and the first thing it says is to drop the tank, the first thing the tank removal procedure calls for is to drop the exhaust from the cat back, and the first thing the exhaust removal calls for is to remove the rear axel. I had my canister vent solenoid go on my 2007 Impala and it cost $100 to fix (covered under warranty). The estimated labor time for Labor Code J6441 on a 2007 Impala is 0.3 hours. The estimated labor time for Labor Code J6441 on a 2002 Camaro is 2.9 hours. If it takes ten times longer for the dealership to do this repair then I’m afraid the bill would be 10 times larger. I’m still not 100% sure it is the canister vent solenoid, so I gave my locate dealership a call. He said for about $75.00 they could diagnose the problem fixing it would depend on what is the problem.

Has any one ever had the canister vent solenoid go on them and have any idea on how or how much the dealer charged to fix it?
