  • A4 downshifting question

    Ok, so let me start by saying that I have a 1996 3800 camaro. I am beginning to do transmission tunning, and I am wondering what the safe maximum range should be, between you upshift and downshift points... This is what I have so far:
    Labels Speed
    1 -> 2 Shift 52
    2 -> 3 Shift 96
    3 -> 4 Shift 141
    2 -> 1 Shift 44
    3 -> 2 Shift 90
    4 -> 3 Shift 138

    I want my car to downshift at WOT sooner...Now, I have 3.90 gears in the car, and the car is upshifting at about 5700rpm which is in actuallity around 57km/h....is it safe for me to put my 2>1 downshift speed to 50-53 km/h...I want to have my car downshift to the lowest possible gear whenever it can when I floor it...I am hoping this will get rid of flat spots and squeeze out the most power...

    So I guess my question really is, what can the range be between your upshift and downshifts? I dont want to break anything, but I want it to downshift to the lowest gear as much as I can...

    Also, if say I put my 2>1 downshift to 55km/h and the 1>2 upshift to 57km/h....would that do any harm? am I risking the transmission not having enough time to shift...or is that a different table?

    Hope that made sense, lol...thanks for the help in advance...

    I just up my rpms to 6000 rpms under norm.,perf. and hot,then to make it shift firmer, go to transmision under shift properties go to desired shifts, I put all tables to .200 thats normal and perforamnce tables. I never mess with the tables your using, I did once and I had the car stutter on shifts.

      yea...see I want to leave the shift points where they are at the moment...but I just want the point at which is downshifts to change...so if upshift to 2nd is at 57km/h...I am wondering if it will hurt the tranny to command a downshift at WOT at say around 54km/h...therefore the transmission would downshift and be in 1st for all of 3km/h...then upshift to second...rather then just going into second...my thinking is that even if the tranny is only in first for 500rpm...thats 500rpm higher I will be going into 2nd gear with...

        My A4 is from a 02' and I had a Transgo Shift kit put in and Vette servo so it shifts really well. When I put the pedal down it will put up back in your seat, and even just crusing I can mash the pedal and it will go, theres no lag. I can't tell you about the up shifts since I don't know anything about them. But be careful and don't blow up the tranny. Good luck with it.

          Mine looks like this with 3:73's but I have lowered my shift points. If I recorded a 1/4 mile run the top end of each gear on the RPM graph, Started to flatten out, So I lowered the shift point to just before it started to flatten. When the RPM graph starts going from vertical to horizontal your not accelerating as fast.

          You only have to edit the normal table. Our cars do not use the performance table.

          If your transmission is stock your not going to get crisp shifts unless you zero out your desired shift time table. You also need to bump up your shift pressure. You may want to leave some time in it down low so it doesn't bang at light throttle. I pasted what mine look like.

          Labels Speed
          1 -> 2 Shift 49
          2 -> 3 Shift 97
          3 -> 4 Shift 150
          2 -> 1 Shift 47
          3 -> 2 Shift 96
          4 -> 3 Shift 147

          Labels Engine Speed
          1 -> 2 Shift 5450
          2 -> 3 Shift 5200
          3 -> 4 Shift 5500

          Just remember that both speed and RPM need to be met for the trans to shift up.

          desired shift time

          Labels 0 40 80 120 160 200 240 280 320 360 400 440
          1 -> 2 Shift 0.30000 0.30000 0.30000 0.20000 0.10000 0.00000 0.00000 0.00000 0.00000 0.00000 0.00000 0.00000
          2 -> 3 Shift 0.10000 0.10000 0.10000 0.10000 0.10000 0.00000 0.00000 0.00000 0.00000 0.00000 0.00000 0.00000
          3 -> 4 Shift 0.10000 0.10000 0.10000 0.10000 0.10000 0.00000 0.00000 0.00000 0.00000 0.00000 0.00000 0.00000

          The whole table didn't fit here but everything over 440 is zero's.

          shift pressure table

          Labels 0 20 40 60 80 100 120 140 160 180 200 220
          1 -> 2 Shift 0 5. 18 30 42 54 66 76 84 90 94 96
          2 -> 3 Shift 0 14 26 40 54 66 76 84 90 94 96 96
          3 -> 4 Shift 0 6 14 24 34 46 58 68 78 86 92 96

          everything above 220 is set to the same value as the 220 column.

          Also set your max pressure at 100.

          Those settings are for a bone stock transmission. Should make it shift nice and firm.
          I spent allot of time making the rows all line up , but it didn't stick when I submitted it.

            Re: A4 downshifting question

            Nice...you posted that you have yours set up like this:

            Labels Speed
            1 -> 2 Shift 49
            2 -> 3 Shift 97
            3 -> 4 Shift 150
            2 -> 1 Shift 47
            3 -> 2 Shift 96
            4 -> 3 Shift 147

            which is what I am looking at doing....

            one question your upshifts are
            1 -> 2 Shift 49
            2 -> 3 Shift 97
            3 -> 4 Shift 150

            set to those...in actuality...what are you upshifting at? I know these tables are supposed to be set slightly lower then the speed you shift at (cause 2 conditions need to be met)....cause I originally had my 1-2 set for 57km/h and 5700rpm...and I pegged it off the limiter...

            also, that is in km/h right?

            thanks.

              Re: A4 downshifting question

              I converted all that to Km/h for the post I don't read Km/h while I'm driving, but it shifts very close to the MPH the settings are at.

              Both RPM and speed have to be met for it to up shift. It will shift when the second value is met doesn't matter if RPM or Km/h is met second, But I like to keep the speed as the first value met and let it shift when the RPM reaches the set value.

              Your speedometer has to be close for everything to work correctly.

                one other kind of dumb question...If I set the mph setting to say 53 (when the rpm setting is met at 5700rpm, which is closer to say 55-56km/h) the car will shift...now what if I am in the snow...I floor it...the rpms of 5700 would be met, but the speed of 53 probably won't be...will it still shift up? or am I going to be bouncing off that rev limiter when I get stuck...

                  yes because your tires are still spinning.

                  if you are in 3rd gear at 5700rpm your wheels will be spinning at 55mph no matter what

                  the only time it wont be is if your transmission is slipping

                    ok sweet...so Im safe to set my 1-2, 2-1 shifts about 3km/h apart....I really just dont wanna bounce the limiter for yet a 4th time...somethings gunna give eventually...
