  • Got an ignorant question for an ignorant person

I hate to sound like a complete noob, but I just purchased a 96' Camaro 3.8 A/T that has the factory Bose sound... Well, I just purchased a Pioneer head unit (forgot the model, one of the single din models, probably the cheapest one that has HD radio and USB), and I need to know where to start on removing the factory head unit LOL.
I've owned 2 fox body Mustangs, still have an 89' LX 5.0, and Ford's 2-pronged "key" system for removing these things is so simple - so even though I've replaced sound systems in those cars, I still feel like a complete noob LOL.
I do have the wiring harnesses ready for this car, so I won't/shouldn't need to cut or splice wires, just need to know where to start to remove the head unit without damaging any of the dash.
Also, any suggestions on mounting kits? I don't really care about anything "custom" looking, I prefer a subtle, factory look.
1st poster here, long time lurker, glad to be here!

EDIT: Yes I did try the Search function, but couldn't find anything relevant to my problem (or at least anything in lamon's terms LOL).

its way easy, all you have to do is just pop off the pannel in front of it and then there two bolts and its out. the pannel is on with just clips, just kinda grap it from the top and pull a little and youll feel how it wants to come off. i know what you mean the first time is always the worst cause you dont want to break anything lol. good luck!

Re: Got an ignorant question for an ignorant person

Thanx a ton! Going to attempt this job tomorrow morning... Hope it works out!
Oh, and by the way, I couldn't remember the model number of the Pioneer head unit I bought, but now it's right beside me... it's DEH-P3100UB. Hope it'll be a good upgrade from stock. I thought it had HD-radio capability, which it does, but I just now seen that I have to buy a $100 box of some sort to actually receive HD radio! :(
Also, anyone know of the best kind of wiring harnesses to buy for these? The generic GM one available to me isn't what I really want to use, is there anything available just for the Camaro?

Now, if I can just find a crashed Pontiac GTP that I can take the supercharger off of, I'll be set with my new car ;)

Whats the problem? Monsoon took over in 97.

The Pioneer deck will work for you just fine, but because of the impedance difference between regular aftermarket and the Bose system, your stereo will be very loud, and the lowest volume setting will be quite high. I've got a box in my room that corrects this problem, that wires right into the wiring harness with a bit of splicing, and I'll send it your way if you PM me your address. I'd say wait for the box to install the stereo unless you want to take your dash apart twice. And good luck with the install!

Thanks a million! Tried to PM you, Gr8Schlotszky, dunno if it went through, kept taking me back to my inbox, and wouldn't show any sent messages. Will try again in a few.

And as far as the S/C goes, after reading a bit more on that GTP S/C, that's just too much work for so little of a gain. I'll definitely be going with a centrifugal kit, or a used turbo if budget permits. Thanks to everyone for the help.

Coincidentally, on the way home today I passed a V6 '96 camaro for sale on the side of the road. The flier in the window said "bose sound system" and the head unit was a Pioneer. It was sitting in a shopping center parking lot, but if it was in someones yard I'd have asked where they got the mounting kit for the head unit for ya :naughty:
