  • My sub box

Not quite done yet, need carpet, but I thought I would post up some pictures.

It will house up to a 12 I'm sure. 15's are out though, sorry guys. I could probably create one that would fit 15's, but I'm only using 10's myself.

Made from 3/4" MDF with a mount depth of 7.25"

Probably grossly huge for most 10's, when I get more time I'll see how it sounds with the couple of speakers that I have. (Sudden brainstorm: that crazy sucker would house 3 f'n speakers. 38" wide. Derrrrr.)

    All by itself:

With a crappy 10 on it:

Cool, looks like some pretty nice craftsmanship...

      Thanks :)

MDF is heavy stuff, I think it weighs about 50 lbs as it sits. Right now I've only got 2 subs. I will space it so I could add a third if I want to, but I'll probably use the center between the speakers for amplifier placement.

If anybody wants one, they can PM me, this one took about 3 hours to put together, I can take measurements for plans if anyone wants to try for themselves, or if they want me to build them one for a price :)

Huh, the one in your cardomain looks more like a box that would replace the seat back of the back seat, that notch cutout looks like it's for the drivetrain hump. Nice quality looking piece though.

No divider, I thought about it but didn't (I was wanting to get it done, I could probably add one though). I'm surprised actually to not see more boxes like this, since it has a lot of airspace, but doesn't eat up your trunk.

And it really wasn't that hard to build, just a table saw to make it easy.

Because we live in cities where the first 17 year-old kid that walks past your car parked in the mall....and easily sees your setup through your rear window.... well, you can finish the story.

Also, I don't see t-top holders down there. So why not make a box to take up the trunk area and just store your junk on the "shelf" area if need be? Or back seat? How many of us guys actually store stuff back there anyway? I lived without a trunk in my bird for about 6 years. Maybe TWICE I wanted that space. I'm willing to sacrifice to keep my setup from predators.

well in my town is not to big and not to small but everyone knows my car and i dont got to the mall with my camaro or leave it in parking lot that might have "activity" in it that i dont like i have my 2 way viper alarm with motion sensors and i "custom" 357 mag shifter handle so if they see that they just walk away bc i never park my car where i cant see it and i will catch them and find them

                Re: My sub box

I made a two-12" box that fit down in the ttop holder area. It was flush with the level underneath the drivers taillight so I mounted my amp there.

It sounded great and was completely hidden.

I know it's a little late for that seeing you already made a box but i would be afraid those are going to get stolen...

but looks to be a great quality...will look nice w/ some matching carpet

                  Re: My sub box

True, that can be an issue. I live in a smaller area, and this car spends the vast majority of its time either at home or at work. My Fiero sub is right between the seats for all the world to see.

I have had it stolen once, and that was because it spent 3 months at the mechanics waiting on A/C parts. In hindsight I would have pulled it out (it's not too hard) but I didn't expect it to be there that long. The mechanic was really nice about it though, he felt bad and covered it since it was on his lot.

That was over a year ago, and I've never had any problems since. The biggest problem was that it was sitting for a long time (in a not-so-nice area to boot). I'm just very conscientious about where I park now.

Bad stuff happens, but I'm not about to compromise on the part of some douche bag that things he deserves my stuff more than I do.

Plus, I am making this box so that it is relatively easy to take out (for autoX), so if I know I'm going to be somewhere that's questionable, I can pull it before I go.

                    Re: My sub box

                    Update post!

Here are a few more progress pictures. I have the rough install done, the only thing left to do now is carpet and clean up wiring. Now that I have driven around with it for a day or so, I have an idea of how it sounds and looks. It will definitely look better once carpeted, but it definitely doesn't get in the way for visibility. Sound quality is so-so, but better than expected for the amount of money I have in the speakers. ($20 for the speakers and 100 for the amp, 7 years ago). Bass does not overpower the music. It does fill in the lows nicely though, especially for what I listen to most of the time.

The box is sized right for a pair of Kicker CVR10 speakers according to the spec sheet, so future will be upgrading to those and a better amplifier(s).

Alright, to clear up any questions about rear visibility:
Rearview mirror, you can see the reflection of the setup in the back glass, but it's not bad.

                    From the driver's head rest:

Through the back glass, yes its very visible, pretty much the only downside to this intstall:

                    Detail of the rough install:

Looks good man. I personally would have angled the subs to bounce it off the hatch. I had a custom box sitting right in that area too that aimed them straight up, then got one for the trunk that angled them forward abit and bounced it off the hatch and the difference is amazing!

Hmm, I may try that, I can easily prop up the back side of them at least temporarily.
