  • Elemental Design VS Alpine Type R

So, I am thinking about utilizing my amp (Audiobahn A1801X)that has been sitting in my attic for 1 1/2 years. Don't ask me how I ended up with a Audiobahn amp, it's a long story. It's not a bad amp. It thumps. It's rated 560 @ 2 ohm (12.5V). I am looking for ONE sub, that's it. It's Dual 4ohm voice coils so that I can wire them at 2ohm.

    NOw, here's the dillemma

    1. http://www.edesignaudio.com/edv2/pro...products_id=31
Elemental Design: I have heard nothing but good things about these subs. I am thinking about going sealed or maybe vented. I don't know which one sounds LOUDER or more suitable for this sub. Any input would be great.

    2. http://www.alpine-usa.com/US-en/prod...&lang=en&tab=F
Alpine Type R : I am an Alpine die hard fan. I love everything they do. I had two type S in a sealed box and I loved them. With Alpine, I deff. have to go sealed because that's what they recommend.

NOw, you guys decide which one I should go with. Thanks.

I voted ED but it's just my experiance that they are much better to work with. I've had both brands and prefer ED as well. But the real question is: What are you going to be using it for? Loud or precise, rap or jazz, boomy or crisp, etc

I listen to all. Rap mostly. I mean c'mon, if you're gonna be using sub, you gotta listen to rap. I want it to be loud but crisp at the same time. I achieved that in a sealed box that's why I am leaning toward sealed box. But again I have always wanted to try out ported. Never knew how they sound. Well, thanks for your input. Since, you've used both, type r and ed, your input is very useful.

Re: Elemental Design VS Alpine Type R

Well, I am very much happy with my decision to go with ED. I picked up a type R at bestbuy and had it in for a day or two, then took it back and ordered a 11kv.2. I'm currently only putting about 200 watts to it, but it's more bass than i could possibly want. Now, I listen to mostly alternative rock so I prefer precision and crisp sound over loud, but I've played my share of rap and bass tests to test it out, and at moderate settings, it still shakes me up and puts out more bass then I would ever need. But personally, I think the best part of my system is my 16-band equalizer. My 10 sounds like a 12 and adds everything i want to all types of music.

But since you're no longer in a camaro, you don't have the same projection effect from the rear glass, so it may take a few more watts to get the same effect, but it sounds like you've already got that covered.

I'd probably recommend a ported enclosure if you listen mostly to rap, but personally I like a sealed enclosure for any and all music.

I would say that ED and Alpine are in completley different classes...

Id go ED all the way, professional sound.

I dont know if I'd go THAT far now.... It's not like we're comparing Audiobahn or Legacy to Focal or Arc. They are both great sounding small box subwoofers in the same price range. Keeping in mind that the enclosure plays a large part in this of course.

We're comparing ED's "budget geared" K-line vs. Alpine's performance line. The Type-R has alway been known as leaps ahead of the Type-S and obviously Type-E lines. Sounds great and works very well in small enclosures, sealed or vented. (Which makes me ask why you MUST go sealed with the Type-R?) I'm not really saying the Type-R is way better or vice versa..... just don't sell it short. ED's K-line is certainly no slouch, and hey I wouldn't mind running their gear myself, but my vote goes to the Type-R.

Re: Elemental Design VS Alpine Type R

fyi the type R subs are all over ebay for the same price youll pay for the lesser (imho) EDs. i dont have any experience with the EDs, but ive put quite a bit of power to my type Rs and they have yet to show any signs of burning up. if i were to choose between the 2 without knowing what either one would do id choose the type Rs simply because of their construction.
that and the amp youre using would probably put a hurtin on the EDs with a 2ohm load, where the type Rs would probably respond very well.

Re: Elemental Design VS Alpine Type R

Well just an update, I went with Elemental Design. I love Alpines. I just thought that I could try something different. Many auto audio magazine rated Elem. design. as a very good sub. There were instances were people actually returned type R to get elem desi. They were saying Alpine had muddy bass compare to e.d. I have yet to hear someone regret about buying e.d. Saw some videos at youtube and their site. It was enough to convince me! "96firebird311" I have almost bought Type R from ebay after I read your post but I just wanna try something new since I already know how alpine sounds like (I had dual type S in my prev. camaro).BTW, here's my previous setup:

Dual type S in sealed box
MTX class D amp pushing around 700 rms at 2ohm
                Alpine cda-9815
Audiophonics 1.5 Farad capacitor (<-- bought it just for appearance :D)

Well, everything is ordered and they are on the way. I am gonna use ported since I listen to rap, rock music. can't wait to see how this sub bumps! :D thanks for all the input.

P.S. "96firebird311", did u put any system in your RX-8?

yes, do please let us know how they work for you. im curious as to how theyll compare to the type Ss.

btw my previous subs were type Ss, replaced by type Rs. on the same amp there is a big difference, not to mention that same amp wont eat the new ones.

Moved the Adire Audio Kodas from the bird into the 8, single 12" in a vented box all powered off a 5-channel amp. Will soon be switching to two 10"s in custom stealth boxes. No headunit replacement yet. Using a high end LOC (Audiocontrol LC6i). Mazda integrates the A/C controls in with the freakin headunit, so I'm forced to buy.... get this... a $750 adapter/dash kit to install aftermarket headunits. Waiting until Metra or Scosche makes one and can drop the price under $500 ATLEAST. Then getting an Eclipse AVN6610 direct from manufacture for $800. (through work) Still large pill to swallow, but I refuse to pay $750 just for the freaking dash kit.

I'm actually trying to decide that same thing I used to have type r's with a jl 500/1 and it was amazing. I also had mtx 8000's and infinity perfects in that same setup and the perfects were loudest and sounded best. Those were the old type r's though.
What are you gonna do for a box? prefab boxes probably wont work well with either sub, since most prefab boxes are around 1.5 cf and thats pretty big for those subs. let me know how they sound.

                        Sealed ( ideal ) 1.0cF
                        Vented ( ideal ) 1.5cF Tuned to 30Hz

                        I got vented 1.5 cf

Sorry about the quality. Taken with iphone since I can't find batteries for the camera.

I still have some work to do. Tomorrow I will do the "wire hide" mod and take some high res pics. The indash dvd is working very nice. It just perfectly matches with the dash. It's pretty loud. Actually it's more than what I have anticipated for so, umm yeah I am super happy with the whole install.
