Re: How to charge your audio capacitor

wow, what did i start! Well, I am kinda confused now. Since, i have digital voltmeter, I can see the voltage before and after. After the cap install I have gained (or am sending) 2 extra volts to the amp (around 14 instead of 12). Now, shouldn't that give me a little more RMS for my sub? My amp has 40 amp fuse so, 40*14= 560 WRMS rather than 40*12=480 WRMS.

Do you have a volt meter on the cap or on the amp? Those are two different things.

13.95 at the cap and 13.5 at the amp... There is one problem with caps right there :)

Watch the volt meter on both when bass hits. In fact, burn a CD with a 30hz or 35hz and run the stereo at 2/3 or 3/4 volume steady with the bass going and check the voltage then.

Ok I just took this pic 1 min ago. it was a cold start so rpm was around 2k. My cap is saying 14.75 while amp is saying 14.0. But when i connected my amp directly I could only get 12-13 on the amp. so, having the cap i have some volts but it's not sending all from the battery. But again battery not suppose to send 14.7. I though max volt was 14.4. very confusing!!!

Re: How to charge your audio capacitor

uh.. did the amp read 12 volts with the car off? Your amp volt meter will read whatever voltage the alternator is putting out, has nothing to do with the battery (assuming there is no cap). If the car is off, the alternator is not running, so the volt meter will read lower being that batteries sit anywhere from 12 to 13 volts.
The cap will also read whatever voltage the alternator is putting out, but with the cap in front of the amp the amp will actually see less voltage (as shown in your picture).
And the good side is 14.4-14.8 for an alternator. That is where you want it to be. When it gets hot your voltage will probably be down around 13.6 to 13.8 volts. Drive your car around all day, then check the volt meter :)

edit - the reason why, before I go to bed:
Caps have an "ESR" which is the resistance of the cap. Most caps have an ESR in the 0.02 ohm range. This means, according to ohms law, when you flow 100 amps across a cap (ie, from power source, across cap, to the amp) with a 0.02 ohm resistance there will be a 2 volt drop. If this flow increases to 300 amps, there will be a 6 volt drop, etc. ALL caps have some sort of resistance so, unless they defy electrical theory, will cause the amp to see a lower voltage than if the cap were not there. Lower voltage means less power.

wow! thanks man. makes me wanna take my capacitor off. I am too lazy to do it though. I am definitely surprise how these companies making millions of dollars on something that doesn't even do it's job. SHAME!!!

dude, don't believe this guy, he's a crock. He's the only person on this earth who thinks having a cap is bad for your electrical/sound system.

your wrong about that... I don't fully agree with him either but a lot of people argue cap pro's and cons...

please if you feel the need to argue this further refrain from name calling and disrespectful bashing. do it in a mature manor or stay out of this thread

You are incredibly naive if you think I'm the only person who believes this and made it all up. Plus, you have yet to prove me wrong on anything. I've given scientific FACTS while you have given nothing.

ok, so your telling me that better sounding bass, and lights no longer dimming is a result of LESS power because of the cap that supposedly decreases voltage...... i don't think so. sorry bud, but explain that one to me in "scientific facts" :bs:

I think it is you just believing what you want to believe.

no seriously, just explain to me how something that supposedly takes away power can actually help give power (by the reasons i spoke of) seriously. i'm not mad, just explain it to me and i will discotinue my argument.

Headlights dimming + 1 farad cap = headlights no longer dim.

I would consider that a beneficial outcome. Who cares beyond that. That's all anyone posting on this board has problems with. Lock the damn topic.
