  • fiberglass question

ok so after a few weeks of researching i've come to realize that making a custom sub box out of fiberglass isn't as hard as i thought. i went to my local hardware store and about 3 car parts stores and finally found all the fiberglass resin and fiberglass mat/cloth that i'd need. since i have a convertible i don't have t-top holders in my trunk, and the subthump stealth boxes won't work in my car since i have the convertible pump in that cubby hole. anyway, i went ahead and taped off every inch of my trunk then covered that in aluminum foil, then went to town with the fiberglass (all of this occured last night, btw). then today i took the mold out of my trunk. i was pretty impressed with it, but i couldn't get the damn painters tape and alumimum foil off of the outside of the mold! so finally here's the question haha...does anybody have tips on how to get the tape/tin foil off of the mold?

    Re: fiberglass question

I sprayed mine with a light coat WD40 before I started laying mat. Most of it came right off, but there was a couple spots I had to pick at. I've also used a couple products designed as "mold releases". Like a can of wax. A little late for these methods now...:(

You're just going to have to pick off as much as you can and just leave the rest on there. It's not going to hurt anything. Plus it's on the backside of the box nobody will ever see, right?

      Re: fiberglass question

yeah that's true nobody will ever see it so it's not a big deal. i plan on putting some carpet on the bottom too so it looks nice and fits a little more snug. btw this stuff is getting easier and easier to work with! the box is coming out awesome. i designed it to fit in the bottom of the well in the trunk (since i don't have t-top holders there) with two 10's poking up a little, angled toward the rear of the car. i'll post some pics when it's done

Nope, pretty easy... But now your car stinks to high heaven. I get my fiberglass from this dude on eBay. His username is fan8. He sells some kick *** 50+ pound Biaxial Mat for super cheap.
