  • Door speaker options

This is my current audio setup:
    Pioneer 7800mp
    kicker kx350.4 amp powering
    pioneer 2-ways in the sails
    11kv.2 10" in stealth box
Stock Bose doorspeakers with stock Bose amps

After many hours of adjusting my deck's 16-band equalizer, I'm pretty happy with the sound of my current setup listening to most music (mostly different styles of rock) But with the more acoustic style stuff and jazz, I like to listen at higher volume levels, but when i do this, the lower end of the doorspeakers start to distort. Overall they lack midbass but my sailpanels do a nice job of filling in, but i'm looking for a little something more.

How plausible would it be to replace the actual speakers in the doors, leaving the bose amps in there, and possibly adding a crossover and mount a tweeter in the doorpanel somewhere? I guess the real question is, what is the weak point of the bose door setups? the amp or the speaker? If I end up ditching the amps, I probably won't be buying another amp to power those, so they will be powered off the headunit.

I'm looking for sound quality at higher levels. One song in particular, Coldplay's "Til Kingdom Come." I think i'm going to stick with coaxials. I mostly want a little more midbass from the front than the bose speakers have to offer.

Price namely. I'm open to suggestions, but i'd rather get something on the cheaper side.

        Maybe that?

I still want to put 8" subs in the sails. I'm waiting on my amp/sub to come in first though, then I'll worry about that.

I'm looking for a full range speaker that gets better mid-bass than the current bose door speakers, not full on subs. I was actually impressed with the sound quality of the 2-way pioneers in the sail panels (for the price). Just trying to figure out the options.

So how about the stock bose amps? Would a better set of speakers get much better sound off the stock amps in the doors?

Not real familiar with the Bose system.... more of a Monsoon guy. Pretty sure the Bose system has seperate amps for each speaker. You'll have to get in there, disconnect and remove one of the sail panel speakers from the car, and meter it with a multimeter. If they are 4 ohm speakers, any aftermarket speaker will be a drop in replacement. Any don't expect a real improvement in bass from aftermarket coaxils. Especially Pioneer's. I hear Pioneer's vs Polk's vs Kicker's EVERY SINGLE DAY. Out of the three, Polk FTW no contest.

                  Re: Door speaker options

The stock bose speakers are 2ohm, and yes, there is a separate amp for each speaker.. Running a higher impedance shouldn't damage the amp though right? I'll just need to turn the fade a bit to the front. I don't have a special preference on brands, but the pioneers i got for my sail panels sound very decent for the $20 i spent on them.

To stick with 2ohm, are there many options available for 2ohm? I know 4ohm is the standard in car audio, but like i said, running a higher impedance shouldn't damage the amp, just put less wattage to the speaker, correct?

I'm not looking for incredible bass from the door speakers, I just want a little more midbass, to thoroughly cover the male vocal range, and fill in the lower range of picking bass, guitar strumming, or the punch of a kick drum or tom.

                    Re: Door speaker options

Running 4 ohm speakers won't harm anything. But I'd search long and far before I just settled on them. Most all of the companies I know that made 2 ohm speakers..... don't really exist anymore..... start googling. Good luck!:)

I'll search some more for 2 ohm speakers, but as far as taking another direction at it, how about something like this:

                      http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage....=1166840026793

I keep telling myself I won't buy from bestbuy anymore, but I keep ending up with credit at the store, so I figure it could help out the price if these are worth the money.

                        Re: Door speaker options

I really like my 6.5" infinity reference speakers. I have those in the doors and in the back running off a pioneer head unit. The tweeters rotate which I like, and the bass is definitely livable without a sub.

                            wow, old thread here...

not sure what you wound up doing, but i do know that a good set of speakers can really wake up the bose amps, for anyone who may stumble upon this, but i remember before my bose door amps took craps, they didnt have much bass at all...

what'd you end up going with, out of curiosity? Satisfied?

A lot of adjustments including equalizing and pass adjusting. With all the right settings I'm getting the right sounds from all the same components without distortion at higher volume levels.
