sub cuts out

ok well let me start with saying that i know nothing about audio. yep can build an engine but i haven't learned audio...ne ways. i have a PIONEER PREMIER 850 WATT AMP and PIONEER TS W256D 800 WATT SUB. i got it more for looks than anything. didn't really care much about air and that stuff. ne ways my problem is...when i try to blast the sub, it will cut out on me. it's wired up right. and it work fine other than when i try to blast it. someone was telling me that it might be that i don't have enough power for it.

the amp went in to get fixed. they said they fixed it. but i still had the problem. the warr. is up now.

what do you guys think?

i think get a capacitor maybe. Also just a thought... my subs used to cut out and it was because i had a bad connection in the main power line at the fuse holder so make sure all your connections are snug.

but then if it was the connect wouldn't i blow fues? and it wouldn't only do it under the max bass?

first off, i never blew a fuse when my connection was shoddy it just cut out whenever there was a lot of power needed. Second, make sure your amp is good enough for your sub. Third there is a sticky in the audio section about capacitors, they basically store charge to feed your amp. General install picture is this.... it basically goes between your power line to your battery and your ground wire so lets say you cut those two wires, you would then plug them in the cap and connect them on the other side. It has to go through the cap to get to your amp. You can usually mount it on a flat surface with screws and it does not usually weigh more than 5 lbs. You can get a 1 farad cap or 2 or 3 or so on. Caps cost around 80 to 150 $

amps cut out when they overheat also... when your amp cuts out see if the amp goes into protect mode... a red light will come on.

it needs to be in a well ventilated area to dissapate heat. could be a lot of things like a bad ground.

you won't necessarily blow a fuse w/ loose connections

well i don't think it's over heating cause i've had it mount alot of different places, i can put it on, turn in up with in a few seconds and it still does it.

lol yeah i forgot it could be overheatin too but i doubt it, its not like your runnin a huge system. What are the specs of your wiring and whatnot?

what gauge wire? Where is your amp grounded?


BTW you can join team guinea pig if you wish but you'd have to add a pic of one =)

i got a wire install kit from circuit city. it had everything in it. since i don't have a rear seat, i used the bolt where the rear seat is bolted to the ground. i sanded off the paint and what not.

i had a long haired guinea. i don't think that i have any pics of her :(

You might want to move the ground wire somewhere else, or the amp is being over powered and is clipping. What is the rating of the amp and what ohm is the speaker. Also what is the final load on the amp. But I think it is your ground. I have my 4 channel amp under my rear saet delete and the ground is wired back where the hatch opens. Right behind the carpet where the latch is, there is a grounding point. I use that spot for my PPI 4150 amp and my PPI 2300 amp for my Alpine type R 10" in a stealth box. Never had problems with that grouding point back there. Good luck.

How many ohms stable is the amp? Is the sub a DVC and how many ohms per coil? How is it wired? My fiance has a system in her celica and she had the same problem it would work well, hit nice and tight but when she went to really pound on it it would go into protect mode. It turned out that the sub was wired for lower ohms than the amp could hanlde and it still be stable. I switched it around to the correct way to have the amp be running a stable ohm setup. Personally i dont think that it is a lacking power issue. I have two pioneer 800 watt premier amps 2 ohm stable each powering a 12 inch 1200 watt pioneer premier dvc, 4 ohm coils,wired in parralell at 2 ohms. I pull my battery gauge all the way down to like 9.5 volts and i have yet to put them into protection mode even with that little juice going to the amps. Just my 2 cents though.

Although amp mounting location can easily play a role in amplifier overheating, it doesn't automatically mean you're amp will be in the clear. (I didn't read every post, sorry if I'm restating something) If the actual impedance of the subwoofer is below the rated impedance of the amp, the amp will often play fine at low volumes when the power requirement is low. When you crank it, the amp overheats very quickly and kicks into a protection status. A very similar situation can occur with low voltage. When you crank the music and the power demand is high, the voltage drops below what the amp is rated to and kicks into an under-voltage protection. (used to happen on my old Fosgate bd1000a1) Do your headlights dim when the bass is played hard?

We need you to crank it, wait for the sub to cut out, and then immediately take a look at the amp. See any protection lights? Does the power light change color?

Do you have a multimeter at your disposal?
