ever popped a speaker? not just fried or blown it...

i was showing some friends the "fidelity range" of my system with this one track (goes from 20000hz down to 20hz in one tone) with it cranked up pretty high. about half way through the track i hear this pop, like a firecracker. i though it was the bonfire we had going till i seen this cloud of smoke coming from my drivers door. i though i blew the 6 1/2... which would have sucked because theyre fairly new and ive had my drivers door panel off far too many times lately dealing with the shaved handles.

i noticed the tweeter hanging from the wire, in far too many pieces.

it literally blew the mounting bracket back too. it was at about a 45 degree angle

theyre wired in the front channel, with the 6 1/2s. wired in a manner where it keeps 4ohms, but cuts the power to each speaker in half. the fader is still thrown way to the back.

basically figure theyre getting 60-75 watts. yeah, probably overkill for a 99 cent pair of ebay tweeters, but they have been working for quite a while. till now anyways.

Hahahahaha just get 3-way 6.5" like you should. IF you feel like being a fool and using poker chips to make sound, don't put 65w into them. It looks like an a small IC popped on you. I did this to a 555 with 1,000v once, accidentally. :D

i have 3 way pioneer 6 1/2s on all 4 corners. if you want to make reccomendations you should say get a matched component set. thats when i would tell you for what my system cost it sounds (a little less now) damn good. the tweeters arent necessary, but they do add to the fidelity.

                        Re: ever popped a speaker?

The 3-ways should have built in tweeters, thus 3-way speakers have three separate cones; one of which is a high pitch tweeter. The whole point in getting 3-ways is you don't need to worry about tweeters because they are built in.

Then again the way you talk about your system: "for what I paid it sounds good" leads me to believe you got $10 3-ways and they are terrible.

Get decent 3-ways that have quality tweeters and crossovers built in, and toss the poker chips.

                          Re: ever popped a speaker?

what part of "i have 3 way pioneer 6 1/2"s on all four corners" do you not understand? then add the "tweeters arent necessary, but they do add fidelity" part.

after looking at them again today i find out that they are, in fact, 4 way pioneers. if you can find even 1 (just one) 3 way pioneer for just $10 do please show me where, because i recall paying almost $70 for each pair.

then consider the factory mounting position of the 6 1/2"s in the door of a 94 camaro. i dont care if the speaker has 12 tweeters, theyre not pointed at your ears. high frequencies need to be directed towards the human ear to be effective, unlike low frequencies which are unidirectional and can be heard from many different directions.

so again, if youre going to make recommendations you should say to get a component set. dont know what those are? its a single component mid bass speaker with a separate tweeter... one that you mount in a position that directs the sound to your ears.

i have done a number (as in the hundreds) of systems, so this isnt my first rodeo buddy. for the amount of money i have in my system it sounds damn good, and there are plenty of people that will attest to that statement. if youre going to make assumptions and suggestions do your research before opening your mouth. there are a few of us out here that do know what we are doing.
