I bought one of these right after Christmas and I absolutely love it! But it's only worth it if you have an ipod1996 Silver Camaro RS, A4, K&N CAI, Flowtech exhaust, !MAF screen.

Re: b-day gift help
I was going to recommend the X001, however please realize it does not play CDs. Strictly for use with an Apple iPod. I personally wouldn't care, but I know some of us are still living in the 1990's and use CDs.
The sound quality is not going to be different between the two companies. A common misconception. Also, saying "the iPod sucks for BASS" is also false. It's only going to be as good as your source. If you encode your MP3's with a low bitrate, yeah, it's going to sound like trash. Almost allof my MP3's are at 320kbps. I have no complaints in the least.

im not stupid, i know the settings of the ipod, and there is nowhere near the bass it gives out compared to a cd
also, alpine is proven to give better sound.. even though the numbers on the pioneer may look better, it just isnt.. just like how my core 2 duo (2.13GHz) is faster than a 3.0GHz P4 computer, just because the GHz is higher doesnt mean it is actually faster

Re: b-day gift help
I was clearly referring to the bitrate that the music was encoded. Let me guess, you have the MP3s shrunk down so you can cram as much as possible onto your iPod? Rip your CD at 320kbps and you'll have no problems. I've been using an iPod exclusively for my music for some time now.... you can easily get every bit as much bass from an MP3 as you can a WAV file on a disc.
Try this out. This file was only ripped at 192kbps and I bet you have better luck:

(type in the 3 letter code in the box and wait the 45 seconds for the "free" side, then it will allow you to download)
Pop that on your MP3 player and give er a whirl.Last edited by 96firebird311; 02-04-2008, 08:26 PM.

do a google search and you will see that this is a problem with the ipods.

I've been doing it for years now. Two 15" L7's under the hatch, SLAMMING from an iPod. Sold the car and then a single 12" Type-R BUMPED with an iPod in the new car. And now a pair of 10" CVRs tearing it up back there. Please don't dare respond with, "well imagine how much louder it would be with a regular CD." This is far from my first rodeo. I've been doing this since before Kicker made it big, Fosgate was all that mattered, before there was eBay to buy your gear from, and back when people said "Now why would anybody need 1,000 watts..." I install mobile electronics for a living. It's more than an internet hobby.
On that note, let's ask a third party. 96Silverbullet doesn't even have a CD player in his car. Only source of audio is the iPod and FM radio. So what's your verdict Silver? Does the iPod connection suck for base? [sic] :DLast edited by 96firebird311; 02-04-2008, 10:50 AM.

Re: b-day gift help
There are so many variables with MP3's and playing them in you're car stereo. The component that is playing them for one.. IPOD etc.. how well does it reproduce the sounds.. Quality of the MP3's.. Volume has nothing to do with quality. If you want to go old school to get most "True" to life sound you get a turntable since CD's and MP3's are digital reproductions of music.
Alpine is a great optiion for a head unit.. I have a Eclipse 7100 which is also a excellent choice. I almost did by Alpine, but very happy with my choice.
