  • Trunk Space Size?

I have a 97 firebird non-ttop. I was wondering how much space there is in the trunk, including the spare tire well. I want to know how much room for a sub box there would be. Thanks.

you can get a custom box that fits right in from subthump.

I've fiberglassed the entire trunk without and again with the side panels. I was getting close to 8 cubes without the side panels, but it was a HUGE PITA to affix the mounting baffle to the fiberglass mold. I scraped it and put the panels back in. Started over.

so it got 8 cubic feet? everyone says theres barely enough room, if thats right theres a crapload of room.

do you know how to measure it without the fiberglass mold?

Get a 12"x12"x12" box. Fill it full of packing peanuts. Dump it in. Refill and repeat until you can't fit anymore.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe cantrip already has some bump in the trunk. Considering that and the question he actually asked.... my guess is that he's looking to do something big. Something subthump cannot help him with.

Cantrip. Remember to account for fiberglass/wood thickness and sub/port displacement.

                Re: Trunk Space Size?

True, i didnt really think of that. I wanted to grab 2 12inch FI audio BTLs. After really thinking about it i do want to build a box to specs. I was talking to a few people on an audio forum and they said one of those 12s will be plenty loud. Im sure they arent wrong when the sub is rated at 2000w rms. I started to also think of the 15inch and now thinking of it even more if theres a lot of space. i still would rather have the look of 2 subs but id rather not get 10s and i want to keep the sound good.

Here is the website to the subs.
                www.ficaraudio.com

                The specs are under:
Speakers > BTL > and then the specs are right there.

Just wondering if you think (2) 12's, (1) 12, or (1) 15 would be best.

Even considering that massive 18 incher they got :naughty:

One 15" vented would probably give you the most bang for the buck. With two 12" subs, you obviously must put up the money to purchase two subs over one. Also, you have to power em both as well. Might be a touch louder, but much more expensive. My vote goes to a single 15" in a properly designed ported enclosure. That's MORE THAN enough, even for a bass head.

Oh and you don't have enough space to port that 18"er..... save your breath. lol

I do like FI audio, but that speaker is 18.5 Inches diameter.. so figure atleast 20 Inches including boards on side of box. Plus 9 inches deptth. And you need 5 Cu.f ported design. It would be nice!!! but that is a big area needed for it. The Q 18" is only 6 Cubic food sealed might be easier.. no port etc.. I have convertible so I do not know if you have the room back there.

That's 5cuft BEFORE sub and port displacement. A proper vent for that bad boy will be over a cube EASY. It's just not happening without some major work.... that I know you're not doing.

Only way I could see fitting the port in there would be for it to extend out outside of the box.. which would not look well. I am betting would require 6 inch port about 18 inches. just to keep from hearing chuffing from the port. I did not model it out.. so are just guesses based on a home sub I am building at the moment..

as for the 15, you saying it would fit? with the right space?

15 would fit some others hvae put one 15 in their trunk. Only problem I see is the 15 you chose requires a vented box, and fitting that vent might be difficult, not impossible. Sealed would be alot easier.

Seriously 18 might be possible, only top part is 18 inches round.. figure basket probsably down to 15 inches.. and are only about 10 inches deep. Would be fun to have but that would be ALOT of bass. Would probably have to angle it forward to get it to fit though.
