  • Port my box, or not?

I have a smaller homemade box in my car, with 2 12's...it's a pretty shallow box, maybe 8 inches thick. I know i should get a better box, and i plan to for xmas, but for now i gotta work with what i have. Right now the box is facing down, kinda jammed into the opening of the well. Would cuttin a small port in the bottom of the box, and facing it upward over the well help, with the volume of the bass? It has good bass response, but not much volume. any help would be awesome :)

sounds like you already have a small box as is. And you just cant cut a hole, you have to measure air space, dicplacement of subs, tuning frqeuency and what not.

Its a LOT more complicated than just drilling a hole though.

Agreed. And with 8" of depth in a tiny box.... you're really just out of luck unless you want a sub box with a chimney

What I've found on speaker box volume recommendations is that ported boxes recommend more airspace than sealed, so you can't "fix" a tiny box by porting it.

you are correct^^^ ported enclosures require more cubic feet of air volume usually around 1.5-2x's that of sealed enclosures. so porting that small of a box is a BAD IDEA. you *might* get more volume (as in decibels volume, not space) but your sound quality will go down the trash. the you will stress your sub, and burn out your amp. And all of that will happen if the porting job was done right, not just you cutting a random hole in your box. so i'd think twice, unless of course you want to play mad science and treat your gear like a guinea pig, in which case disregard everything i just said

Tell us a little more about your system. what amp, and subs do u have? and i'm a little confused by your description of your box placement. pics, perhaps? if you have at the very least decent subs, and a decent amp, with 2 12's you should be bumpin. :dj:
