  • Sealed or Ported?

about to recieve two 12" type r's and was wondering what type of box I should go for. Also I want to build it myself so if anyone has dimensions for both types of boxes to fit in a 96 Camaro with t-tops I would appreciate it. Thanks for the info.

Not necessarily. Go sealed, you'll have better bass response in all frequency ranges. If you go ported you become real limited to whatever your port is tuned at.

O ok. Thanks man. Thats what I heard. I personally like my sealed better than some of the ported Ive heard. I guess its just how its really setup and the equipment when it really comes down to it.

sealed sounds way better imo, but isnt as "available wattage" friendly. ported tends to sound louder, but sealed sounds cleaner.

as far as dimensions the paperwork that comes with the speakers will have square footage dimensions for both ported and sealed boxes.

Both are good. Ported will yield louder and even cleaner bass IF properly tuned and built. If you're buying a generic box, go sealed; if you're building the box, go sealed; if you're dishing out the money for a custom, professionally made AND TUNED box, go ported.

A properly built vented enclosure can yield plenty decent SQ. The real question is, can you build a proper vented design in the trunk of a Camaro? It's not exactly square....

If you're going to attempt it, let me know the exact model number of the subs you will be using and I'll shoot you some figures. To make it a little easier on you, I would suggest using 4" PVC for your vent(s). Use a 4 1/2" hole saw and spray the inside of the PVC black. Super easy to get the exact length you'll need.

                  Re: Sealed or Ported?

(2)SWR-1242D Alpine Type R's. I believe if I build the box myself ill being going with a sealed box. With my current set up I have loud, im really looking for clean. But if I could get some estimates on a professionally built ported box I would perhaps consider that. The PVC idea sounds like it will be alot of help. But if anyone knows a professional that will fabricate a box in South Jersey, please let me know so I can get some estimates myself.

Thanks for all the help I just a need a little more, thanks guys/ladies.

Don't live in Jersey, but good luck with your build. If you decide to give the ported box a whirl, just post back up here. Need a ballpark estimate of what you think you'll be getting internal volume wise. (Because I have no clue what your ideas are back there lol) At 3.5 cubes net, you'd need two 4" PVC pipes 18.5" long each. So if we were to add in port and subwoofer displacement, you'd have right at 4 cubes of needed internal volume.

And given how big my sealed ~2cubic foot box is, that's a BIG box...

Post up what you end up with, custom stuff is cool...
