right now i've got an old JVC HU, in the car when i got it. the CD drive's been actin up, and i've been toyin' w/ the idea of gettin a stock bose HU, as i eventually plan to convert back to the full bose setup.

i was perusing around on ebay looking for bose HU's, and the ones i saw said that the bose HU itself has no power output, that w/o the individual amps, it wont work. i still have the rear amp powering the sub and sails, but a while back i deleted the bose door amps and run the doors off the current HU...sooooo would i need to rewire the bose door amps before an oem deck would work?

also, could i use a base (non-bose) deck, so i'd have some power to the door speakers seeing as how only one of my bose door amps is in working order, and keep the rear bose amp still in use?

    Re: stock HU inquiry

Usually, in vehicles with amplified factory audio systems, the stock headunit outputs very very little power. It just serves as signal for the stock amplifier to pump up the power. So if you install a headunit with a small built-in amp of some kind, you're sending a much stronger signal to the same amp. (An amp that has no user adjustments to compensate) In most cases the amp amplifies just as it should, and you get extremely loud and often distorted sound even at volume setting 3/50 and 4/50 on the headunit.

You can use an aftermarket head and have everything else in the car Bose with these F-bodies. Many people have done it on this board. So why even chance any of these questions? It would seem the best of both worlds to just buy another aftermarket headunit. Power the doors as you have been and power the sail panels like you said you've been looking to do.

Like I'm sure I've said already in one of your threads.... why the hell are you wanting to switch in all Bose equipment anyway? #1, if you really want all stock for some reason, use the Monsoon system. They're both terrible, but the Monsoon is the better of the two. Easier to figure out and install too. Only one amp to worry about. #2, if you're just tired of having a huge sub box/amps in the back, do cheap co-axils up front and the ED 7K's in the sails, all powered off an aftermarket headunit.

      Re: stock HU inquiry

thanx for the suggestion and insights. looked up a buncha stuff on the monsoon system this mornin.

But to answer ur question as to why, it's because when i got the car, everything in the Bose system was there and operable, minus the aftermarket HU. i LOVED that system while it was fully operable...the best system in a car that age i've heard by far.(i must politely disagree on it sucking)...If i loved it so much, why dont i have it now? well, the door amp fudged out, and back then i didnt have the knowhow to fix it, as i do now. SOO my fix was to delete both door amps and wire direct, and took the sails out cuz they sounded crappy w/o the stock HU's low pass.

and as to why i dont get new speakers and another aftermarket HU, well that's a pretty good question actually lol...i've just always liked the clean*ER* look of the stock HU, compared to the crappy install kit around the HU in my car now...basically, i want the best sound i can afford on my highschool budget, and i know that gettin the Bose working again will deff. be worth my money.

plus, if i went monsoon, or went w/ aftermarket amps and such, id have to buy all of it...i already have all the Bose stuff, just have to do some repair work, and hook it up...

Ahhh. Thought you were looking to buy used Bose gear to replace your broken Bose stuff.

I understand some people's view on liking the stock headunit look. But the fact is, they're not the most dependable units (like the rest of the system) and they don't have 1/4 of the feature any aftermarket unit does. Since the invention of the MP3 file, stock headunits=. Have you seen the dash kits from www.humount.com ? There is a member who just installed one on here and posted pics. See if you can track the thread down. Sure it's a little more money, but if you're happy with the look, who cares.

As for fixing your botched solder job, you can always reheat the solder and use a solder-sucker to suck it off the connections. But I'm sure you'd have better luck taking it to someone to have done properly. You have an electronics class at school or something? Maybe a teacher that will do it for you?

well, the thing about the botched solder job...everdently those pins are VERY soft material, and melted from the heat of the solder, and therefore a few are shorter...and it's still not making a good connection...

so, i'm gonna attempt to "fix" my screw-up, and if it's unsuccessful, bose door amps can be found for under 10 bucks...i might give that a try, and if that lets me down, then i'll be looking other directions...

EDIT: and thanx for that link! i do believe i'll grab up one of those kits, since i now have to replace my HU (the cd player took a crap on the way home from Prom last night...go figure)...
