Speaker Choices...

The stock speakers in my stock 97 firebird are dying.. As such, I went to a local radio store. They installed two Pioneer TSG1642R 6.5-Inch 180 Watt 2-Way speakers in the doors.

I was going to have them put two of these in the back seat (behind the front seats) too, but they said something about the stock speakers back there being midrange, and that these would sound good in the front, but not in the backseat. So, now I am looking for some midrange Pioneer speakers that will sound good in the backseat.

My plan for now is to keep the stock head unit. Soon I will add an amp and a bass speaker or two in the back. Later I will pull the head unit and install a car pc and run the output to the amp and rewire the speakers.

I am a computer guy, I am not a radio guy.. but I want some good bass. Any advice?

How much did you pay for the Pioneers? Honestly, they're one small step above junk. Circuit City has a great deal on Polk's going right now. $85 for the first pair and $42.50 for the second pair. Check their website. http://www.circuitcity.com/ssm/Polk-...oductDetail.do

Don't expect ANYTHING in the way of bass from your 6.5"s (especially the Pioneers). If you want bass, buy a subwoofer. On that note, view the thread in this section labeled "Awesome deals for the f-body" for some great deals on original sub setups. If you have any other ideas/questions, just ask.

Polk Audio make good speakers. If you want bass get some subs. MTX makes damn good subs.

Is it their amps that suck? My dad has an MTX amp to a smaller MTX sub, and it's quite honestly the worst sounding POS I've ever heard.

yea those speakers are garbage, if you want some good speakers go with either diamond audio or kicker

I paid $89 for the two speakers, installed into the door.

I wonder if the deal on the Polks at Circuit City is good in store as well?

The radio store stated that since the Pioneers were not midrange, that it would not sound good if I replaced the back stock speakers with the Pioneers, Will I have the same issue installing 4 of those Polks to my stock head unit?

The shop said "the Pioneers were not midrange"? That statement makes no sense; I would consider a different radio shop.

hey ricks i work at circuit city in the car audio dept and yes we will match that online price just say that they are cheaper online and polk makes a very good speaker and mtx is okay for those of you who say that they dont sound good it depends on what type of music you listen too and also they have to be tuned correctly... they sound great for rock music:rock:

I agree Polk makes great speakers...the rear by the back seat are feed only the bsss frequencies and the doors offer midrange signals....one set of wires for a tweeter
and one set for the midrange.

RickS, as for the exact signal being sent to the rear seat speakers, it depends if you have the Monsoon, Bose, or non-upgraded system. I bet your other shop didn't even ask did they? At any rate, like I said, don't expect anything in the way of low end from your interior speakers. But in all cases, replacing the speakers next to the rear seat will "work".

As for low end. Use speakers that were meant for playing low end..... subwoofers.

And yes. If the special is not labeled in the store, just ask one of the guys about it. They'll look it up to verify and make the change. Be aware that most sales go Sun to Sat. So this deal may be gone by close of business Saturday. And for installation, come on. You can do it! With the car at my shop with my tools, I could probably replace all 4 in an hour by myself. For a newcomer with no cordless screwdriver, probably 3 hours. lol

i would completely recommend changing everything yourself. i got all alpine stuff installed in my car a few years ago at Circuit City, and i paid $10 each for some converter plugs (for each of the four speakers) and they didn't even use them. i took off one of the speakers one day, and they had cut the connectors off the end of the stock wires, cut the connectors off of the speaker wires, and electrical taped them together. no converter plugs at all. further proving my point that everyone who gives a damn about their own car should do everything themselves.

I am unsure what the car's stock stereo is (Monsoon, Bose, etc). The door labels are worn off so I have no idea how to tell. The HU is a tape deck, with equalizer & 12 disc changer.

Before I read this post, I had already ran out to Circuit City and picked up four of the Polk DB651's that you recommended. Are these going to sound good (better than stock speakers) if I install all four? Or should I just replace my current speakers with brand new stock speakers from GM and just add an amp and subwoofer in the trunk later.
